I am a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois with a B.A. in Mathematics. I am an accounting professional, who seeks to expand upon a tutoring career, with the hopes of attaining a teaching certification in the Baltimore City Public Schools. I believe in the excellence within every student; to that end, it is important to tailor every lesson to each individual skill and experience level. I would like to be able to assist younger students who are having trouble with their subjects. With my vast experience in mathematics, my knowledge can carry over into many of the basic skills required for elementary learning. Also, I have prior tutoring experience in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade language arts. My efforts were very reading comprehension driven, whereby I would ask the student to interpret a variety of passages by answering questions based on those texts. Finally, I have tutored science classes at the elementary level, which have focused on topics such as the metric system, measurement, and basic geology and biology. The foundations for study skills in these lessons came from understanding the material and applying it to problem-solving. For instance, a student who was learning about the metric system would first need to understand the basics of conversion, then apply those skills to answering quantitative questions.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have both tutored and done extensive research in elementary math. I have learned best practices for the elementary mathematics learner, such as individualized lesson plans and a tactile educational environment. I have a vast arsenal of fun, yet enriching, math games, which I feel are essential to promoting academic growth in young math students.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra 1 for over 2 years, and my students have, on average, earned a 1.2 grade-level increase. My educational techniques are assessment-driven, so I do not simply assist with whatever homework is due the next day. I focus on the foundations, bringing additional materials and question sets to my sessions as needed, in order to ensure a holistic learning environment.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Having earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Northwestern University, I am very comfortable communicating high-order mathematical concepts and theories. My college-level adult learners have achieved an average 2 grade score increase while under my tutelage, and I am adept at relating the difficult concepts presented in college math courses.

Geometry,

Geometry

As a graduate of Northwestern University, part of my major included studying pure mathematics, namely, Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. With my extensive research base, I have obtained a mastery of geometric concepts and forms. On a practical note, I have over 3 years of tutoring experience in geometry, from the 6th grade to the 10th grade level. Geometry, as a very concrete branch of mathematics, lends itself exceptionally well to problem based learning.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is an essential bridge between elementary mathematics and algebra. The higher-order algebra, geometry, and calculus concepts built upon in high school will be virtually incomprehensible without a solid prealgebra foundation. I have over 3 years of tutoring experience in mathematics grades K - 12, and I understand where a student may experience difficulties in connecting the gaps between introductory and advanced algebra ideas. I have developed a number of academic techniques to assist my students to grasp and excel at advanced math and critical reasoning skills.

What a wonderful tutor! Very patient and knowledgeable.

I like the way Laura works with my son. She is so knowledgeable, friendly and did I say patient?! Thanks Laura.

PJ, 3 lessons with Laura

Exceptional tutor.

My son, a HS senior, has been working with Laura on Algebra 2 and Geometry for the past month. She has been very easy to schedule lessons with, and extremely pleasant during our interactions. It quickly became apparent that Laura is quite competent at teaching math skills. Even my son, who can be a tough critic, told me that she is "really good" and "is helping me a lot." Her lesson reviews have been useful to me so that I know what they are working on. She has even reached out by email to my son's teachers to find out what they are working on in class. I could not have asked for a better tutor to help my son with these subjects.

Tutor responded:

Thank you, Sheila! It is wonderful to hear such kind and gracious praise. Your son is a very motivated student; I could not provide the assistance I do without his dedication!

Excellent

Laura has been very excellent and patient dealing with my son who's entering Loyola Blakefield. She even helped him about test taking that I decided to continue all year round. I hope Laura will be available when my next son who is 3 in the future.

Thank you so much for your glowing feedback! Having a student as motivated and focused as Matthew certainly makes a positive impact for me as a tutor. He is very much the model pupil!
