Having changed my major from Biology to French, I had ESL Conversation Partners and that was my first experience with tutoring. Then, I was an intern at a Catholic Preschool teaching French and German. In May of 2001, I received my first B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Since I wanted to teach, I applied to participate in the AGABUR Exchange Program, headed by a Professor from UCONN and based at Friedrich-Schiller University in Germany. I chose DaF as my major and IWK as my minor. There were also some French and translation classes that I took as well. A requirement before classes as a Haupthoererin at Friedrich-Schiller University was to take two German language month-long courses. I did my first one at Friedrich-Schiller University and my second one at University of Potsdam. Before leaving Germany, I took a DSH Course at the University of Mannheim and passed the test. The DSH is kind of like the TOEFL exam in English-speaking countries.

Upon return to the U.S, I was unable to find a job teaching German, so I enrolled in a second degree program at Old Dominion University, where I graduated in 12/2004. Still no job in education, so I applied to a Fulbright Austria Fremdsprachenassistentin Program and was accepted. I was in EFL Classrooms either teaching or co-teaching for the maximum of two years as well as studying Lehramtstudium Deutsch/Englisch at the University of Salzburg, being first admitted as Bachelorstudium Germanistik acquiring some credits, but no degree.

Then, I returned to the U.S and still thought that with that experience in a classroom in Austria as well as my credits from the University of Salzburg, I could work in a classroom in the U.S. I found out that as a sub for Virginia Beach Schools, I would need to be certified, so I started a Master's in Education Concentration TESOL at ODU in 05/2009. I received the M.S.Ed degree in 05/2011.

Then, I worked for a total of one year, 2 months, and 2 weeks, and 2 days in education in the U.S and have been unable to obtain fur

Attention To Detail

As is the tradition of the Germans, Jennifer is very attention to detail oriented. She went above and beyond to create a lesson plan for our young son that kept him intrigued. We will be back next week. Thanks Jen!

Great With Kids

We are so excited to be working with Jennifer for our toddler son to be introduced to German. She truly cares about her work and it shows in her attention to detail with her lessons. See you next week Jen!

In-Depth Formal Academic Knowledge; Fast Recall; Impeccable Grammar; Professional

I am an advanced student (C1-C2 level) who needed advanced grammar review. I studied this stuff intricately, just got rusty and wanted to review in a supervised environment. I knew exactly what I wanted and sent out some very demanding advertisements, and had sessions with several tutors including with native speakers. Jennifer was my favorite because she understood immediately exactly what I wanted from the lesson, so we didn't waste time, and was able to provide advanced level grammar practice and guidance (reminding me not only of the correct answer when I got it wrong, but of course, explaining the rules governing the formation of that tense, mood or construct). She provided great material for the lesson but was able to adapt smoothly and transition to material I provided without having sent it to her beforehand. In some cases a nonnative speaker can be a better choice than a native speaker because they have spent a great deal of time studying the grammar formally and can teach it from the perspective of an outsider - that's my opinion, as a language learner.

great teacher

She has been very patient and made sure the student understands the instructions. My daughter felt comfortable and participated well in the session with Ms. Jennifer.

Knowledgeable, patient, and willing to go the extra mile

Jennifer has been great working with my daughter to get her ready for her AP German test in the Spring. She has even committed to purchasing additional texts and is always on top of communicating assignments, homework, and what they will be working on next. She's been very patient as we struggled to make this a routine and that definitely goes a long way for this single parent of a very active teenaged daughter!
