I have taught French, Spanish, ESL, and English composition and literature for 20 years! I've taught students from all ages, all backgrounds, and all levels. I have taught in traditional classrooms, online classrooms, small groups, and 1:1. I've been successful at this because not only do I know my subject areas, but I also know how to listen and assess the needs of others. I have a PhD in French literature and a teaching license in adult education. I have taught in universities, private high schools, adult schools, and cultural centers. The thing that makes me successful in all of these environments is the same: I listen and respond. One of my hobbies is improvisational theater. The fundamental principle of improv is "yes, and." This means observing the other person, listening to them, and building on that. This is also the core principle of my teaching practice. We are together in the business of your learning. You are in charge of that process. I will lead when necessary, but you are ultimately in control.
I am a pretty gentle teacher, but I can push when I sense that is needed. I always try to put myself in your position, remembering that I it was a long process to get to where I am, and I didn't do it by myself. I had lots of help, and continue to rely on others to teach me the things I am learning now.
