Public Speaking

Courses taught at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA (2013-present): Advanced Rhetorical Theory Seminar Description: an upper-level rhetoric course surveys classical and contemporary rhetorical theory from critical and transnational perspectives. Students will engage representative texts from East Asian, Islamic, Western and post-colonial traditions of rhetoric(s), and evaluate their critical implications for interrogating present-day public messages. Message Analysis Description: a general education course designed to introduce students to principles of rhetorical theory and criticism, by evaluating a wide range of public messages in both traditional and new media formats. Emphasis is placed on learning the ways in which public messages are adapted and circulated across diverse audience groups, and how to critically engage attempts to influence how you think, feel, and/or act. Group Communication Description: this course explores communication within the context of small groups. Students will study and perform collaborative, adaptive, and conversation-driven communication, and manage the complex tasks and social processes inherent to groups. At the end of this course,students will be able to: [1] collaboratively deliberate on issues of public concern; [2] select and implement optimal problem-solving strategies; and [3] manage conflict in small groups effectively. Effective Communication - Public Speaking Description: This general education course studies the effective use of oral and digital/visual communication as a means of addressing public problems in policy and civic contexts. It is designed to introduce students to principles of rhetorical analysis, implemented through the design and presentation of problem-policy speeches adapted to diverse audiences. Academic Writing Description: This course is for undergraduate students who are intermediate-advanced level non-native speakers of English. Students will become familiar with the various stages in the process of academic research
