Please note I have just begun updating my profile. I have my GA preservice teaching certificate. I am graduating from Mercer University with a Master of Art in Teaching in Elementary School Education in 2018. I am currently looking to help elementary students and/or children or adults in photography, drawing, painting and/or art history.

I have already passed my GACE in Art Education. I recently worked with second grade students in Gwinnett county and Forsyth county 4th graders which was great. I had planned to get an MAT in early childhood education, however I decided to earn it in special education which covers K-21. This covers general education, special education and gifted students.
I have both professional and personal experience with ADHD/ASD and sensory integration disorder. We all learn differently and teachers should always prepare their lessons with this in mind. Students do not need an acronym to learn in a different way from most of their peers. Some students learn hands on far better than reading from a book or sitting through a lecture. In fact, I would wager a majority of children and adults fit into that category. Unfortunately it does not mean that all teachers teach with that in mind.

I hold both a BFA and MFA. My undergraduate major was photography and much of my MFA centered around photography as well. My graduate thesis, Conscious Living, spoke about communities that were striving to be self sustaining. As I have a great interest and respect for the 'Waldorf' teaching method, I took a course with the Center for Anthroposophy at the Waldorf School of Atlanta.

Although photography has often been a focus, I thoroughly enjoy/studied painting, drawing, art history, screen printing and more! I have a never ending desire to learn and love sharing that knowledge and experience with others. Some of my previous art history classes have been in; African Art History, Modern Art History, Ancient Egyptian Art History. and African art history (which was

Art History

I hold both a Bachelor of Fine Art and Master of Fine Art. As you may imagine, In order to earn both of these degrees many, many art history courses had to be completed. In 95% of all of these courses I earned an A. Although this is not an entire list by any means, I will list some of these courses for your edification: Modern art history Ancient Egyptian art history History of photography African art history A generalized art history for undergrads that covers prehistoric art history through 1500 a.d. (or c.e.). This usually means cave paintings/sculpture (think Woman of Willendorf) all the way to the High Renaissance (think Da Vinci). Two or more generalized courses related to art after 1500 a.d. (c.e.) that takes you through all the major artistic movements including; Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo, neo-classicism, Romanticism, Art Nouveau, surrealism, dadaism, minimalism, cubism, impressionism, post-impressionism, abstract expressionism, Pop art, color field, Suprematism, post modernism, street art, etc.
Drawing,

Drawing

At Atlanta College of Art I had two years of foundation drawing classes. They were required to attain my degree. After those two years were up I elected to take some other drawing classes including "Experimental Drawing". In that class the definition of drawing was stretched to it's outer most regions. I also took "Drawing Mixed Media" which allowed me to incorporate photography or other media into my drawing assignments. I recently taught drawing/painting in depth to a wonderful teenager last summer and weekly to a pair of twins. I've also worked at a children's art studio and as an Instructor for summer art camps. I believe having a good foundation in drawing is paramount to doing other medias such as painting. Drawing skills are invaluable to you. Some of the exercises you can expect are: Gesture drawing, Contour, Blind Contour, Long timed pose, Short timed pose, still life, Using charcoal and other media, and some other assignments I have created myself. I always ask my students to keep a sketchbook to use as a place to journal, sketch, keep notes, brainstorm, etc.
Painting,

Painting

I received my BFA from Atlanta College of Art and my MFA from Georgia State University. At both universities I enjoyed taking painting classes. At ACA I had my own painting stall along with the other painting majors (which was very unusual, lucky for me). I was able to work in the stall for as much time as I liked on paintings or anything else. Best of all, if paint accidentally dripped or splattered on the floor it wasn't a big deal. I sure do miss my painting stall! Although photography has been my forte I love to paint. I find it very relaxing. I have ample knowledge of acrylic and oil painting. I have some experience with water colors and ink. Personally, oil painting is my favorite type to make. I enjoy glazing which is an oil paint specific technique. Oil paint and glazing can give you a glow or hue you couldn't get otherwise.

I hold a BFA in Photography from Atlanta College of Art and earned an MFA from Georgia State University. My graduate thesis, Conscious Living, was about communities that were trying to be self sustaining. Some Professional Experience: I taught 8th grade students in photography at The Howard School in Atlanta. I worked as a Photography Assistant for a company that shot for client's seasonal magazines. I taught Photo I as a TA at Georgia State University. Additionally I ran the photography lab as part of my requirements.

French

French

I took French throughout both middle and high school. We also had a French foreign exchange student that stayed with us one summer. We got along so well that I stayed with her family the following summer month. It was an amazing experience, and I went back to stay with her family two more times. Admittedly, the first time I went I had a lot of difficulty understanding what people were saying. However the second time I went, as soon as I stepped out the airplane, something clicked in my brain. At that moment, I could understand what everybody was saying to me. I love French and I love French people, the culture, and especially the food!

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I passed a course at Mercer University entitled, “Teaching Mathematics”. I learned the new methods that children are taught today in mathematics. Unlike when I was an elementary student, the new methods do not teach memorization but total comprehension. In my opinion, it is a superior method and will benefit the child’s cognitive skills forever.
Homeschool,

Homeschool

I have earned both a BFA and MFA and am currently getting my Masters of Art in Teaching Elementary Education at Mercer University. I have tutored students ages 4 to adult and have direct classroom teaching experience with Elementary students and undergraduates at Georgia State University. Georgia, compared to many states, has incredibly specific criteria that must be met to work in a public school, especially at the elementary level. I have a pre-service certificate, which means the state has run numerous background checks on me. So no need to worry.

Great

She has helped me with my GACE Art Education study material and is very knowledgeable! I have enjoyed her company and the information she has gathered and shared with me!

Merideth, 3 lessons with Carmen

Wonderful Tutor

Carmen is so nice and very knowledgeable on art history! She has helped me with getting through some very tough weeks with my art history class and remains very optimistic for the coming weeks. Another area which she has helped me learn a lot in is properly using in-text citations. She is very quick to respond to any questions I have as well. I highly recommend her!

Bailey, 9 lessons with Carmen

Experienced art tutor for children, with a big heart

Carmen created an engaging and educational art class for our 9 year old son. She was in touch beforehand to ask about his interests as well as to give us tips on the best art supplies to purchase. He had a great time and learned a lot. It is clear that Carmen has both the experience and a big heart for working with children. The class was a perfect balance of education, fun and encouragement. Highly recommended!
