I have been working as a professional tutor for over 10 years. I studied mathematics at the University of Arkansas with a focus on pure and applied mathematics. I went to high-school at ASMSA, which is a two-year residential program run by the U of A that offers college level classes. My professors along with the unconventional courses offered from this school gave me the motivation to become a tutor. I believed that since I was pursuing a higher education in math it was important for me to solidify the fundamentals. What better way to do this than through teaching it to others? I enjoy tutoring because it gives me a chance to share something that has been so important to me while also getting to watch students discover how truly beautiful math is. My top goal is to have my students look forward to the next session as they might not the class or especially the homework!

Throughout my years of experience I have worked with students from 1st grade to those in a master degree program. I have also homeschooled students and helped adults who are returning to school. I've had students in each US time zone as well as internationally so I'm familiar with the spectrum of teaching styles and standards in the field as a whole.

My approach to tutoring is to begin by evaluating the current math level of a student and then setting a series of goals to achieve going forward. From there I encourage consistent and disciplined study. I am open to reviewing a student's work outside of sessions and going over any mistakes or points of interest I find in the work. I can present any given problem in numerous ways until we find one that works best. My strongest skill is being able to really pay attention to a student and see problems from their perspective. I can tell if they actually understand the material or just happen to be nodding their head along. Not only do I strive to make them understand their current material but I'm constantly focused on how it will show up later.

Calculus,

Calculus

In high school I scored a 5 on my AP BC Calculus exam. I went on to Cal III my freshman year and also began tutoring calculus and other mathematics that semester. Since then I have studied differential equations and advanced calculus within the real and complex planes. The combined education and experience has helped me obtain new perspectives on the subject and allows me to quickly see where you are having problems.
Geometry,

Geometry

My high school was a residential math and science charter school. While there I focused on mathematical topics. Afterwards I went on to study pure and applied mathematics at the University of Arkansas. I began tutoring as a freshman and have kept up with it since. I really enjoy this work and geometry in particular as it's one of the easiest maths to visualize and connect to the real world.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have been tutoring for 8 years and began with exclusively prealgebra students. I have since learned and taught higher level mathematics, but no matter how complex a problem it always comes back to the fundamentals. I enjoy tutoring early stages of mathematics, because it helps keep things in perspective for me. Too often math is treated as disassociated fields of study when in reality they are just various tools for describing thoughts and ideas. I've noticed that in the majority of students I work with there is usually some fundamental flaw in their techniques that is disguising itself as many problems later on. From seeing both ends of this spectrum I've developed an acumen for teaching the most basic of math in a way that doesn't trivialize it.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

In high school I scored a 5 on my AP BC Calculus exam. While the topics covered on this exam were more sophisticated than those of precalculus they are by no means less important. Precalculus is the mental primer that helps you look pass an equation into its' patterns, behaviors, and properties. I have tutored for this course every year and I am still coming across new techniques and twists to old problems. Each problem can be viewed in an array of ways and I can help find the one that most helps you understand the material.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I am a senior mathematics major with a physics minor. I took discrete several years back and came out with an A. I use this area of mathematics fairly often and I am very familiar with the material.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I am a senior mathematics major at the U of A in Fayetteville and am well acquainted with the material. I have tutored a few students in the subject through Olde Tyme Tutors before I began tutoring with WyzAnt as well. Finite mathematics gives one great tools for organizing and analyzing the world around them in very practical ways. Once understood and eventually mastered it is a very fun and useful topic.

Logic,

Logic

I have taken and completed a math logic course with an A. It's was one of my mathematics major degree requirements and I have used logic extensively since in the pursuit of elementary to advanced math proofs. It is a subject I have put many hours into and devoted countless sheets of paper to logical equivalence tables; as a result I feel very comfortable teaching it.

Great tutor, easy to work with!

I am thankful Barton was able to help my daughter understand finite math, and we are looking forward to working with him more! He was enthusiastic about math, and after just one session, my daughter is feeling more confident.

Very Knowledgeable

My son felt Barton was very helpful in helping him prepare for his algebra test. He answered all of his questions and made Algebra make more sense to him. Will definitely use him in the future.

Great ways of explaining difficult concepts!

Barton took a lot of time to go through each problem with my daughter breaking them down step by step to make sure she understood. He was very patient and knowledgeable.

Tutor responded:

Thanks so much for the feedback Allyson! It was a pleasure working with your daughter. She clearly works hard and respects the material. That's what really motivates me to teach math!

Above & Beyond!

This was my second time meeting with Barton. He is my first online tutor that I've ever used as I had trouble learning precalculus during this pandemic. Each time he has went above and beyond to help answer all of my questions. He truly wants to make sure that you understand the material. The way he breaks down pre calculus in an easier way is unmatched. I'm so happy that I found a great tutor online who is really knowledgeable. He is my go to now!

Gave my son an instant boost to his motivation!

I highly recommend! My son has been struggling for sometime on comprehension. He has the ability, but has not had it explained to him in a way that he understood it. I highly recommend him! We will keep scheduling sessions!
