My Teaching and Education
I am currently teaching English Composition at San Jose State University in San Jose, CA. I have previously taught English Composition and Literature at Foothill College in Los Altos, CA and at San Francisco State University in San Francisco, California. I have a Master's Degree in Linguistics from San Jose State University and a BA in Linguistics from Michigan State University.

My Students and Clients
I work with students or clients focused on developing their communication through writing, reading, and speaking. I work with all ages: young writers, college students, masters students, and professionals.

For those clients interested in accent modification: I specialize in linguistic speech coaching utilizing a unique approach that blends practice and theory to achieve personal communication goals.

My Style
As for my tutoring style, it is best to start with the basics. Once a student can understand the basic concepts of an idea, they can use that as the structural support for more advanced concepts. With things like language and music, it is best for a student to understand how it works, not just repeat what is given to them. To understand these subjects, I like to go underneath the outer layer and look at the concept from within its core and basic structure. I believe a student should never be given the answer, but rather be guided in the correct direction with tools they need to be able to find it on their own.

I look forward to working with you!

A tutor that knows exactly what he's talking about

I have failed the linguistics section of the English CSET three separate times and was feeling really defeated. One of my friends suggested Bryan and said that he really helped her develop the skills she needed. To be completely honest, I was apprehensive in the beginning because his hourly rate made me nervous; however, since I was already dumping tons of money into standardized testing, I decided to give it a shot. Bryan knows his stuff like the back of his hand and will continue to explain his thought process until his student can grasp the concept at hand. I am SO grateful that I have learned the skills needed to be done with this test once and for all, and am walking away from our sessions feeling confident about my next (and last) retake of this exam. Thank you so much!

Best teacher

He’s friendly even if it’s first time to meet. And his lessons are crystal clear. He has a lot of knowledge about pronunciation also, he knows how each language is pronounced differently than English. I thank hank him!

Great Teacher

Bryan H is a dope very knowledgeable teacher. It’s just my first session and I’m already feeling confident. I thought he was little pricey but he’s worth every penny.

Very good

He is very good! I did just my first class but I like so much. He is very patient and I noticed that he likes to be a teacher. He understands you, and he corrects me all the time. For me it is very important and I like. Thank you.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Bryan is very professional at teaching ESL. He is knowledgeable, friendly and patient. He helped me correct my pronunciation. Rather than give me the answer directly, he preferred to encourage me to find out the answer by myself. It would help me understand the new knowledge better, thought the learning pace would be relatively slow. And like other reviews said, Bryan takes teaching ESL as his lifetime career. To some extent, I would say Bryan would be more professional than some other part-time tutors. Highly recommended!

knowledgeable tutor.

Bryan H. is a very perceptive tutor. He got me to think outside the box. He knows the information inside and out. Sometimes it better to spend more on someone who knows than pay less on someone who is trying to figure it out.

Knowledgeable tutor!!

Bryan helped me with English pronunciation. He was prepared with material aids which made the lesson better. I would recommend him to anybody who would like to improve their English pronunciation.

John, 6 lessons with Bryan

One of the best English tutor in the Bay Area

Bryan had been my English tutor for 6 months, and improved my English a lot! As an engineer, I worked with Bryan to improve my language skills and prepare for my interviews. I really appreciate all the efforts made by him. Bryan has excellent communicating skill and alway be very patient, which makes the learning interaction very efficiently. And also the professional linguistics background gives him the insight to identify students shortcomings quickly. Not like most of tutors on Wyzant, Bryan is dedicated to be a life-long ESL expert. I am so impressed by his professionalism and passion about linguistics. I would recommend Bryan to anyone who has need to improve English. I believe you will definitely get a satisfactory outcome.
