Bio

My name is Archie, and I LOVE math, ever since I was in second grade. In my senior year in HS, I took AP Calculus AB and BC at the same time, and then majored in math in college, and went on to grad school to learn as much math as I could!

I earned my B.A. in mathematics (with a minor in computer science) from the University of San Diego (USD) and my Ph.D. in mathematics from UCSD. I have been tutoring students since I was in high school, including students from high schools and...

I have been tutoring students since I was in high school, including students from high schools and universities - local, all over the US, and Australia!

I am currently (SY 2023-2024) teaching Precalculus at SCY High and Torah High. I previously taught Statistics, Precalculus, and AP Calculus AB at SCY High and Prealgebra at AoPS Academy.

This past summer, I taught Math Bridge (IM1-3) at Hamilton Education.

I was an Adjunct Professor at San Diego Mesa College, where I taught Pre-Algebra, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, Trigonometry, College and Matrix Algebra, Elementary Statistics, Pre-Calculus, Calculus with Analytic Geometry I/II/III, Discrete Mathematics, Introduction to Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations.

I have also taught at the local universities. At SDSU, I taught Fundamentals of Mathematics, Intermediate Algebra, Topics in Mathematics, Linear Algebra, History of Mathematics, and Algebraic Structures. At UCSD, I taught Calculus II. At USD, I taught Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Calculus I/II, and Applied Mathematics for Science and Engineering I/II.

I have also been tutoring students/professionals in GMAT Quant, GRE/SAT/ASVAB/TEAS/CBEST Math, SAS, SQL, MATLAB, Mathematica, and Microsoft Excel.

Before teaching, I was a SAS programmer at various companies.

When I was in grad school, I was a TA for Introduction to Differential Equations, Number Theory, and Partial Differential Equations.

My approach to tutoring is the Socratic method, which is the use of open-ended questions to engage a student in discussion and guide him/her towards some kind of insight.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

I am qualified to tutor in Differential Equations because I took the Differential Equations course at USD as an undergrad. I was also a Teaching Assistant for the Differential Equations course at UCSD for several quarters. I am currently tutoring a student in Partial Differential Equations.
Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I am qualified to tutor in Discrete Math because I am a mathematician (specifically, a number theorist). Discrete Math includes a number of distinct areas of study such as mathematical logic, set theory, number theory, combinatorics, graph theory, and mathematical relations. My graduate work was in number theory and graph theory. I also took combinatorics in grad school. I tutored a high school student in Discrete Math recently.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I taught Discrete Math this semester (Spring 2016) and last semester (Fall 2015). Among the finite math topics, I covered logic, sets, counting, I also taught Linear Algebra this semester, where I covered vectors and matrices. I also covered vectors in my Calculus III class this semester.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I taught Linear Algebra at a university this semester (Spring 2016). I will also be teaching Linear Algebra at a community college this summer. As a math major, I took Linear Algebra as one of my classes and did very well in it.

Test Preparation

CBEST,

CBEST

I am qualified to tutor in CBEST (Math) because the skill areas being tested are estimation, measurement statistical principles, computation, problem solving, numerical, and graphic relationships. These skill areas are well within my capabilities as a mathematician. I have tutored students in similar tests such as SAT Math and TEAS (Math).
ISEE,

ISEE

I am qualified to tutor in ISEE (Math) because the skill areas being tested are found in arithmetic through pre-calculus. These skill areas are well within my capabilities as a mathematician. I have tutored students in ISEE (Math). I use the Socratic or inquiry method of teaching so that students can arrive at their own conclusions and build knowledge.
TEAS,

TEAS

I am qualified to tutor in TEAS (Math) because the skill areas being tested are basic math skills such as whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percents, geometry, measurement, probability, statistics, equations, inequalities, exponents, polynomials, and radicals. These skill areas are within my capabilities as a mathematician. I have tutored students in tests such as SAT Math, GRE Math, and TEAS (Math).

G reat lesson!

Archie helped me understand for of the concepts that I will have to deal with in my next exam, tho it was a lot of work with different equations and different mentions, his non-judgmental and patient tutoring helped me understand that I have to do to be able to get a high score for my next exam coming up.

A lifesaver in multivariable calculus!

I’m currently struggling with multivariable calculus and Archie has been a big help. He has an extensive math background and it showed during our lesson. Archie was able to guide me through my homework problems and helped me understand how to approach the problems I was struggling with. I highly recommend Archie as a tutor for those who need some extra help with math. I’m glad I found him!

Discrete Math

It went great, I really enjoyed our session he was able to explain and answer all of my questions.

Jasmine, 7 lessons with Archie

Discrete Math

Archie M made sure that my son understood the material so that he would be better prepared for both his assignments and his tests. He made it mandatory for him to find his own solutions to the problems to satisfy the lesson's expectations.
