Welcome to my profile! I enjoy tutoring students in a variety of English skills including grammar, literature, writing, reading, and reading comprehension. I confess that I never actually took any English classes for my college degree because I placed high enough on an English proficiency test to be excused from the entire year of English. Since then, I have homeschooled my own three college-aged children from grades K-12. We have used several outstanding grammar and composition programs...

We have used several outstanding grammar and composition programs including Shurley English and the comprehensive Analytical Grammar program. Literature analysis is simple when you understand how to break a work into its various components. I also enjoy working with beginning students who are struggling to read, but I can claim no background with learning disabilities. I use a phonics-based approach to reading mastery. I am happy to work with your school materials or bring some of my own. Writing composition consist of lessons in structure, style, and mechanics including spelling, grammar, and usage.

In addition to my English background, my college degree is a B.A. in Music Education from Western Illinois University with a vocal and general music emphasis. I would love to help any student master music theory, sight singing, note reading, and even beginning voice or piano (levels 1 through 3). Anyone can learn to read music with some basic instruction and a little diligent practice. Bring your music text, and we can unlock the mysteries of music theory together. Get a strong start in piano or voice. Contact me for help mastering any of these disciplines and learn the joy of musical expression!

Learning English as a second language begins with mastering the sounds and phonograms of the English language. The student is trained to read with an American English pronunciation. Grammar comes next, and finally mastery of American-English idioms. Writing skills can also be taught as the grammar and usage of English is learned. I would love to help you improve your English in a logical, systematic method.

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

As a home school teacher and former public school music teacher, I have spent many years teaching the elementary grades and love to work with young children. I use a rigorous phonics program to teach reading, but I can certainly adapt to the curriculum you are using. Spelling can be improved with a combination of memory work and an understanding of phonics to encode various language patterns. Writing must begin with basic manuscript or cursive skills, spelling words, then constructing clear sentences. We work on improving individual sentences before learning how to write a strong paragraph. Once this is mastered, the student is ready to compose longer papers, reports, essays, and research papers. I have worked with students struggling with learning issues and have developed several different methods to overcome math deficiencies. Students with needs in other subject areas--science and history, art and music--are welcome too.

Phonics,

Phonics

Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing by developing the learners' phonemic awareness — the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes — in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them. After completing a training course in the "Spell to Write and Read" program by Wanda Sanseri, I taught each of my three home schooled children and several others to read using this rigorous phonics program. I can help your child to master all the basic graphemes of the English language and learn to recognize and decode them in written material. We can use your child's school materials or put together a Phonics notebook to help encode (spell) and decode (read) the English language using Phonics. I love to work with young students and introduce them to the joy of reading through Phonics. Complete your payment information and contact me to begin tutoring through WyzAnt.

The job of a home school teacher is primarily to help their student or child to learn independently. This entails planning, motivation, organization, and scheduling the student's daily work. I have been doing this for about fifteen years. To help your student master study skill, I would guide him or her in setting goals, planning work, and scheduling assignments. I would train the student in reading for comprehension, note taking, and memory work. Contact me to help you train your student in these skills.

The framework I use for literature analysis comes from Adam and Missy Andrews' curriculum entitled Teaching the Classics. This shows the student how to study each work within its context (of both the book and the author), its literary style, its plot and conflict, its setting, its characters, and of course its theme. We can incorporate this analysis into any other school curriculum. Students will find that It can be a real joy to search for these components in a book and to discover how the author develops and shapes his message.

Music

Ear Training,

Ear Training

Training the ear to discern differences in rhythm, pitch, melody, and harmony takes time and patience. I have a BA degree in Music Education and a strong music theory background. Part of this involves training the ear to correctly interpret what it hears. I have worked with choirs and vocal music in both public and private school situations. I would be happy to help you master the following skills: Discerning rhythm and metrical patterns, Discerning pitch intervals, Discerning major or minor chords, Recording what you hear using musical notation, Hearing the differences between major and minor scales (natural, harmonic, and melodic forms), Identifying various cadences. Please contact me about getting help to master these skills.
General Music,

General Music

As a graduate of Western Illinois University, I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in General and Choral music. I have taught music in the Illinois pubic schools. The General Music curriculum includes lessons in note reading, rhythm, melody, harmony, style, music history, form and analysis, singing, keyboard, and recorder skills. This incorporates everything that would be taught in a music appreciation class and more. I currently teach beginning piano and direct a choir at my church. Contact me for further information about how I can help your student excel in music.
Music Theory,

Music Theory

This is my favorite subject to teach! Learn the language of music with me. My degree is in music education with a choral and general emphasis (BA - Western Illinois University, 1980), but music theory was my special interest. I hope you will find that I can clearly explain this subject in a way that makes sense and eliminates confusion. Bring your own text books please.

Sight Singing

Sight Singing

Anyone who can match a pitch can learn to sight sing or read music and sing back what is written. I first learned to read music through piano lessons. I learned to sight sing in junior high school, honing my skills in high school and college. I earned a BA degree in Music Education with a General and Choral emphasis. The process involves becoming very familiar with the scale in both written and aural forms. Learning the basics of rhythm and meter, a student can usually tap out rhythm patterns as written. Musical intervals are also studied until the student can sing any pitch interval ascending or descending they see in sheet music. Join me for private tutoring and master the skill of sight singing.
