I have been teaching for 21 years. I received my undergraduate degree from Auburn University and my Master’s Degree in Special Education from Jacksonville State University. One of my roles as a special education teacher is to ensure mastery of basic math facts because those facts are crucial when trying to understand higher math skills. I mainly work with elementary age children but am capable of helping struggling readers of any age.

I am well versed in finding unique ways to reach my students. I realize that there is more than one way to teach material and what works for one student may not work for another. My goal is to find out what works for each one of my students and to tailor the curriculum towards that student’s particular strengths. As I work with students I want to do more than just help with completing homework assignments. It is my goal to identify and address areas of weakness. We will work to develop word attack skills, comprehension strategies, and math problem solving skills that students can use now and in future educational efforts.

I have been an elementary special education teacher for thirteen years. I use the courses of study for the elementary grades as I work with teachers to identify objectives to introduce to students with special needs. After determining the objectives of focus for that student we find ways to introduce, practice and test to determine if the information is understood.

As a special education teacher I often have to help students complete graphic organizers. These organizers are used by the students to separate and/or group information so they can process and understand what they must learn. Along with graphic organizers, I encourage students to regularly make note cards. The note cards cover recent lessons. Not just what the teacher said, but they are encouraged to note things that they consider important. They also note ideas/concepts that confused them. They make the cards regularly and build in time (daily, every few days, weekly) to review them. The review of the note cards is not based on upcoming test dates necessarily, but keeping the information manageable. I work with students to use schedules to manage the study time. Particularly for the elementary students, managing time is difficult. I set timers or give specific start and stop times for study, rest, or breaks. A few minutes and just a little while are concepts that they do not provide much structure. I work with the students to "translate" the information that they are trying to master into something that they understand. We work to take the textbook definition and say it so that student understands it. They need to know how the book phrases, but academic language does not always make sense to students.

back at it

The last time Mr.Green tutored my son he was in 1st grade.Five years later we're at it again and I couldn't be more pleased with his expertise.Mr.Green is very patient and kind to my son,Chris. He also accommodates my son's learning challenges. He understands that the traditional way of learning is not suited for each and every child. Sometimes you have to step outside the box.

Great tutor!

Arthur works with my son so patiently. He has wonderful ideas that we can take with us to continue building study habits at home. The lessons are going great so far, and I can see results already!
