I have seen all the obstacles that stand in the way of clear writing and effective reading.

I teach and grade at the college level, so if you're in college I know what your professors will be looking for. If you're in grade school or high school, I can help you get more comfortable with the kind of analytical reading and writing that will get you to the next level.

I have also worked in two university writing centers, so I've heard students struggle with the writing advice or assignment instructions of hundreds of teachers, and I have helped them make sense of their own work. I might even have helped with the very paper you are struggling with right now.

Ask me for help with any of this:
How to prepare for a class
How to read an assignment
How to write introductions, thesis statements, and conclusions
How to structure a paper
How to make your writing "flow"
How to integrate quotes
How to practice reading research
How to understand the context of almost any subject material
How to apply critical reading to literature, classical texts, and modern scholarship.

I can't promise you an A, and I won't write your paper for you, but I can make it easier for you to understand what you're working on and express your own thoughts more clearly.

As a 3-year tutor and BACCHUS certified peer educator, I have helped students make the transition from high school to college, or from early college to late college, including helping with time-management techniques and other study skills. I am good at explaining the connection between work put in outside of the classroom and longterm success, and I know how to speak at the student's level to figure out what the problems are, and to address them. These skills would also be applicable to students making the transition to high school, or having difficulty in high school.

History

Classics,

Classics

I primarily study ancient philosophy, which in my graduate program is extended to include Greek tragedy and comedy, as well as Homer and Hesiod. I have taught books in each of those categories in my own classes at the college level. I also studied Latin and Greek in intensive programs at the University of Chicago, and in regular courses at Tulane University, during which we read parts and wholes of the classics. And I am writing my dissertation on Lucretius.
Political Science,

Political Science

I study and teach primarily political philosophy, which underscores all of political science, and I have used some contemporary political science in my classes. I have also taken courses on the American founding and political theory at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels. And just this spring, I was chosen to participate in the summer seminar of the Jack Miller Center, which is focused on republican structures of government and its alternatives.
Religion,

Religion

I have taught Genesis and Greek religion in my philosophy courses, and have also used secondary writings on revelation-based religions. I presented a paper at the APA on Gotthold Lessing's treatment of the history of Judaism and Christianity. And I have taken not only the comparative religion courses that are required for any philosophy degree, but also many courses on reason and revelation as found in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and their affiliated philosophies.

Terrific tutor

Alexander helped my 7th grade son write 2 papers that he was pretty stressed about. He helped him break it down and work through a plan! Great 1st session. Looking forward to making it a regular thing. He was very calm and patient.

Excellent tutor

My seventh grade son needed help with writing an analytical summary essay. Alex came to our house promptly and set to work. He engaged with him in a discourse to help lay the foundation of the essay. Not only did he provide a lesson in the structure and form of good essay, he help spark an understanding of the critical thinking needed to generate the “meat” of the essay. I would highly recommend Alex as a tutor to any student needing assistance with writing a paper. Ps my son got an A on his paper. Thanks Alex!
