I am known for my kindness and support, encouragement and good humor -- while at the same time crafting a RESULTS-ORIENTED study agenda that is customized and tailored to your needs. I come prepared with degrees from Brandeis, Brown, and Carnegie Mellon and over three decades of successful teaching in English, Social Studies, adult enrichment, and college applications/essays.

I have nearly 500 hours of 5-star-rated tutoring with warm and appreciative reviews from students, parents, and professionals from Grades 4 all the way up through adult. I am proud of my track record and invite you to look it over.

I love teaching and interacting with my students. I have won 'outstanding teacher' awards at the middle school and university levels, working at excellent public and private schools and universities as a teacher, principal, program director, and consultant. I have made multiple presentations at regional and national educators' conferences about teaching and learning, and continue to advise parents as they face the Covid Fall of 2020 with uncertainty about how best to support their children's learning.

Currently I teach full-time English, Social Studies, and test preparation in a highly-rated independent school, having also worked in diverse suburban and urban districts. I work effectively with students and adults from a wide range of backgrounds, and love what I can learn from you as well as helping you achieve your potential.

My own children helped me learn that each student finds their own path and can blossom with the right mix of patience, support, and guidance. I want for all children to become lifelong learners and to embrace their strengths and the contributions they can make to themselves and others.

I look forward to meeting you! To learn more about me, please check my Linkedin page at:

I am a specialist in coaching professionals who are taking next steps in their careers. How do you find your voice, find the words, and discover what's in your head and heart about your graduate and professional plans? How can you explain yourself clearly and persuasively in an application essay, cover letter, or preparation for a job interview? What research should you be doing about a graduate program or a prospective employer, on order to make you an informed applicant? I am a former Education Administrator and Supervisor with extensive hiring and job-coaching experience, specializing in helping candidates build skills and confidence presenting themselves confidently, orally and in writing, in applications for employment, promotions, and scholarships/grants. I have screened, interviewed and hired (or not!) hundreds of candidates and coached dozens more in their school and job applications. University degrees from Brandeis, Brown, and Carnegie Mellon universities. I look forward to meeting you for our initial consultation. There is never a charge until you decide I'm your coach.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

My first speech to a large audience was as the featured Thanksgiving assembly speaker when I was in 11th grade. I loved it. I went on to teach for more than two decades -- one of the ultimate tests of effective public speaking -- as well as to win grants based on testimony before committees of judges and public agencies. I have delivered more than 50 training and/or sales presentations to audiences in several cities and states, and am considered highly effective. If you need to speak in front of a group, I would be glad to help you have fun, and develop your skills, so that you can do a great job and feel proud of your work.

Grammar,

Grammar

Grammar can be fun! You can learn how and why sentences fit together correctly, and amaze yourself and your friends! We will focus on the most important grammatical concepts, and try to avoid those you may only see once on a test some day and that make far less difference to the quality of your speaking and writing.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

One of the hardest things for anyone -- even professional writers -- to do is to proofread their own writing. I can provide you techniques to help you become an "outside observer" of your own writing, as well as convenient ways of testing the clarity of your writing with a little help from your friends. Learn to share this fun skill with others and help yourself and them share your writing with more confidence and precision.

Fear not! EXCEPT for all the excess standardized testing that has grown up around the Common Core, what it's really about is a positive thing. More classrooms are incorporating more analytical thinking, challenging reading, and advanced communication skills in English Language Arts as a result of the Common Core. This doesn't mean the Core is easy for all teachers and students. As an award-winning former teacher of Grades 4 through high school, and a former school Principal, I have lived the Common Core along with you and am prepared to support your child's confidence and skill development to meet its challenges.

Reading,

Reading

I have taught reading, vocabulary, and writing from grades 4 through college over the past 25+ years. Through their reading and writing done in my class, they have studied the work of writers ranging from classic authors to current writers and public officials that subsequently led to in-person interviews with a leading magazine editor, a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, and a Major League Baseball head groundskeeper, among many others. I am a 25+ year veteran of grades 4-12 -- and college undergraduate -- teaching, including extensive work in study skills instruction, beginning with an old "classic" -- the Harvard-Milton Study Skills Program produced as a collaboration between the Harvard Ed School and Milton Academy -- and continuing to innovative methods of helping students employ the requisite study skills/note-taking skills to engage in critical reading and writing in response to literature. I have a lot to offer middle, high school, and beginning college students in the areas of study skills and academic planning/organization.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

It's important to be CURIOUS about and to APPRECIATE vocabulary, and not to let words intimidate you. No one knows ALL the words they read and hear. The challenge is: How do you take what you already know and BUILD on it? We have many ways to do that -- ways that have helped students become more and more the master of the words around them. It's FUN when you get rolling with vocabulary study. I am currently writing a book for teachers on vocabulary development geared for grades 4 though adult; my tutoring specialty also falls within that age range. I have been an award-winning teacher and Education professor, a writer and speaker, and am also a parent of sons who like to talk. I would be happy to work with you or your child on the love of words!

I tailor my approach to your style and needs, and I'm an excellent listener as well as a coach. We'll take what you bring to the table and build on it with skill and encouragement!

History

American History,

American History

From upper-elementary students through advanced graduate students, I have a long and successful track record of helping students dig into, and get the most out-of their History/Social Studies class work, test preparation, projects, etc. I hold New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts state certification as a teacher of English and Social Studies, and am a highly-rated History of American Education professor at Montclair State University. I hold my Bachelor of Arts degree from Brandeis University in liberal arts/sociology; my Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Social Studies Education from Brown University; and my Doctor of Arts in History and Curriculum from Carnegie Mellon University. As a certified and tenured social studies teacher, I taught for over 14 years in the public schools of Brookline, MA, Montgomery County, MD, and New York City, as well as in two highly-rated independent schools. I have developed history/social studies curriculum, trained teachers, and supervised and mentored teachers in social studies. American History is AMAZING. Let me help you develop a feel for this material, see your purpose in studying it, and approach history like the experts do!

Government & Politics

It's getting more complicated all the time, isn't it? Whether you're a middle school student engaged in your first serious study of the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, and Bill of Rights; or preparing for tests, papers, or projects on some aspect of U.S. History and Government; or struggling with a government or history course in college; I am working successfully across all those age ranges and grade levels to bring students up-to-speed, and beyond, in these sometimes-complex topics. Growing up in Washington, D.C. jump-started my passion for Government and Politics. As a high school student, I was selected to help "govern" Montgomery County, Maryland as a "county official" on Student-County Government Day. My 9th grade "Civics" teacher was spectacular -- James Schallmo, Silver Spring, MD. I went on to study sociology and history in college and graduate school, to teach civics and history in middle school, high school, and college, and I remain a "political junkie," read extensively in history and politics, and teach history and public policy at the college level. This should be one of your FAVORITE SUBJECTS !! Let's work together to make that happen!

College Counseling

Using the best practices for writing a credible, informed school or other application essay, my students have earned admission at top schools and universities, even ones that they felt were a "stretch" for them. I also coach graduate/professional school and fellowship applicants. Your essay is not the whole story of your application, but it can make the difference between a candidate who sounds like s/he is seeking admission to "some place," or to a special place you have researched and come to care about. There are several keys I'll teach you, but here's a preview of Numbers 1, 2, and 3: Research, Research, and Research. Why do you want that special school in your future? Why do you want that Engineering, Business, Liberal Arts, or other program at My First Choice University or graduate program? How have you chosen a specific transfer school or graduate program to pursue? You'll show you know what you're talking about, and distinguish yourself from many of the other applicants. I can teach you, especially if you're willing not to wait until the night before the deadline! (Okay, we help people then, too!) This process is NOT ONLY about how you write -- though that does matter! -- but about what you know before you try to express it. College applicants: Let's get started as early as possible, even in your junior year if you seek thoughtful advice on exploring and choosing schools. Last minute? Yes, we can do that, too -- but don't do it again! Graduate school and other applicants: let's look together at your application, goal statement, or curriculum vita, discuss what you most want to communicate, and help you do it concisely and elegantly.

I highly recommend Dr.Robert

Robert is a one of a kind teacher you can find. His passion for teaching showed even during our first conversation. I initially approached him to look for a tutor for my 10 year old son. He noticed my needs to improve my own English skills, and invited me to start a book club. I am interested in American history. So we started with” The Soul of America” by Jon Meacham. This is a tough book for me. But I was able to really enjoy the book because he very patiently explained the information in vivid details. He also introduced other great resources that fit my interests, such as several DK reference books and good websites that engaged me. Robert also noticed my interest and nourished my curiosity in American language and culture; as a full time medical doctor, I keep encountering small examples of things that confuse me or that I wonder about, and Robert loved bringing my real-world situations into our lesson. He respected and cared about me as a person and as a professional while also being my teacher. He was also always anxious to learn from me and my experiences as a parent, an immigrant, and a physician working on the front lines in a very challenging medical climate. These conversations, beyond just the reading, helped build my comfort and confidence as a speaker, writer, and departmental leader. I highly recommend him!

Very Engaging and Fun

Dr. Robert is very engaging and fun to interact with in the sessions he has with my daughter. The time just flies by as they discuss various topics from fables, vocabulary, history, government, and so on (with sprinklings of my own input). We’re always excitedly wondering what will be next. We highly recommend Dr. Robert!

I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Robert!!!!!

I needed help with the Graduate Admission process. I currently have a Bachelor's degree, and my goal has been to get accepted into a Ph.D. program. Dr. Robert and I strategized and discussed different ways to make me a more competitive applicant when applying to Ph.D. programs in Clinical Psychology. I did not have prior research experience, so I decided it would be safe to go the master route. We looked at some great programs that are well-known for their research. I decided to apply to these programs, and with Dr. Robert's help, I received admission offers in my top three choices! In addition, he gave me advice on how to best prepare for graduate school. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Robert for his level of expertise and his lived experience of once being a student himself, especially when it comes to graduate and doctoral studies.

Knowledgeable, humorous, and helpful

It has been a real pleasure working with Robert. He helped me revise several short-answer essays. I am not a native speaker and before working with Robert, I did not have the self-confidence in writing. In our first session, Robert encouraged me and helped me to boost my confidence. His sense of humor helped me to ease my nerve and he is very open to discussions and questions. He also used a semi-interview format to help me sort my thoughts and things that I want to write. He is passionate about what he is going and shows a heart full of empathy and care. After the three sessions that we had together, he now means more than a teacher, but more like a mentor and life coach. Thank you, Robert!
