About Joseph

Bio

For as long as I can remember music has been an integral part of my life. From foundational lessons at an early age to delving deep into the world of Jazz and Contemporary music, I've always been honing in my technique and ears to pick through the intricacies of today's vast world of musical textures.
While attending high school in the Baltimore/Annapolis MD area, I was both engrossing myself in Jazz and contemporary music as I prepared to audition for colleges as well as teaching...

For as long as I can remember music has been an integral part of my life. From foundational lessons at an early age to delving deep into the world of Jazz and Contemporary music, I've always been honing in my technique and ears to pick through the intricacies of today's vast world of musical textures.
While attending high school in the Baltimore/Annapolis MD area, I was both engrossing myself in Jazz and contemporary music as I prepared to audition for colleges as well as teaching elementary-aged students beginner-intermediate piano lessons at my local School of Rock. I obsessed over advanced harmonic and improvisational concepts while also getting a good taste of what it is like to guide others' musical journeys. By the end of my senior year I had nailed down a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music and followed it up north to Boston where I live today!
My experience at Berklee opened up my gaze to the world of writing music, producing music, and scoring films--my most-recent endeavors. This has, however, only reinforced my understanding and appreciation for the building blocks of music just as well as the highest harmonic structures. After mastering Berklee's general music curriculum, I joined their instructional forces as a Core Music Tutor. During my final four semesters here, I was tutoring upwards of twenty students at a time while also tackling my studies in Jazz Piano and Scoring for Media. I was able to instruct my peers from all over the world in courses ranging from the school's whole array of Harmony and Ear Training courses along with Classical Harmony, Counterpoint, Arranging, and Conducting. And all the while, I've been gigging, recording, and arranging behind the piano!
Now that I have graduated, I'm eager to continue sharing my knowledge of the deep world of music I've explored thus far and follow my students as we continue to sift through the never-ending wealth of music in the world. I'm happy to share all I know regarding piano, music theory, learning by ear, college prep, and beyond!

At Berklee I've learned music production in a wide variety of styles such as pop, funk, jazz, orchestral, a cappella, and so many more. This includes a vast understanding of production concepts like navigating a Digital Audio Workstation (Logic, Pro Tools, etc), compression, equalizing, time-based effects, bussing/routing, and even making a lead sheet/chord chart. I've arranged, recorded, mixed, and released much of my own music and collaborated with so many amazing musicians.

Piano has been an immense joy for as long as I can remember--I've learned so much from my past instructors in both Maryland and Boston and have grown to love watching others discover that joy for themselves.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

I have 4 semesters of experience tutoring my peers in Berklee's Ear Training curriculum. This includes everything from beginner-to-chromatic solfege, chord quality identification, learning music by ear, transcribing improvised jazz solos from the masters, and everything between! I've seen ears of all shapes and sizes (in a musical sense of course) and helped countless students and peers expand their hearing's capacity. A musician's ear is their most powerful tool--a well-tuned ear enables a musician to decode others' secrets, keep their composition under the heat of the band-stand, and retain information like no other.
General Music,

General Music

While piano has been the centerpiece for my music career, I've also experienced so many other elements of music. I played cello through elementary school and switched to clarinet and saxophone which I played through high school, I participated in my high school's marching band, jazz band, and symphonic orchestra, and I've also been learning as much as I can about synthesis, DAWs like Logic Pro or Pro Tools, navigating sampling and VSTs, producing music, mixing, and so much more. My most recent endeavor has been getting my hands on the guitar! While at Berklee I was exposed to so much of the music world away from my instrument and picked up on music systems from other countries like Brazil, Spain, Korea, or Japan while teaching my students from all over.

I tutored hundreds of students during my time at Berklee College of Music through a range of subjects from modern jazz theory to classical tonal harmony. Everything from grasping music fundamentals, to the AP Music Theory curriculum, to advanced college-level theory and beyond is within my scope. I've developed countless ways of removing the fog and confusion that surrounds music theory so that it can be seamlessly implemented into everyday life.

I have had 4 lessons with Joseph on an introduction to Logic Pro. He has a wonderful personality, expert knowledge, and impressive teaching skills. I ABSOLUTELY recommend him for any training! He is excited about what he does and it comes through in his teaching. I am a public high school music teacher and am grateful to have found such an awesome instructor to help me learn the basics of operating a DAW. Joseph is still using his skills in his day-to-day work beyond tutoring, proving that his skills are effect in the modern market. Excellent DAW instruction!
