Hello students and families! I am Teacher Darcie from Illinois in the U.S. I am so excited and eager to get to know you and/or your student on an individual level!

I am a recently (early) retired teacher with a rich background in all subject areas. I have a B.S. in Elementary Education. I have a Minor, Master's, and National Board as a Literacy Specialist. In addition, I hold an ESL Endorsement and am both TEFL and TESOL Certified. I taught for 28 years as a primary and ESL primary self-contained public school teacher. I also taught as a Literacy Specialist for grades K-6. After retiring early to care for a family member over five years ago, I have been teaching English literacy (listening, speaking, reading, writing) as a full-time, online teacher working with students ages 3-16 from all over the world. I am a passionate teacher who loves and appreciates each and every student for the unique, special individual he or she is. I am quick to recognize learning modalities, strengths, and areas that need strengthening, but more importantly, I strive to have a deep, nurturing relationship with each individual student. This bond allows me to learn about who they are, their personalities, passions, and interests, things that are so vital in a student's learning. I am dedicated, enthusiastic, creative, nurturing, patient, innovative, and positive, and can "think outside the box", and teach those "teachable moments." Most of all, I am driven to "teach as the world depends on it. "

I hope to meet with you soon so that, together, we can help your student acquire the skills and concepts that will propel them to become passionate, life - long lovers of learning! I look forward to working with you very soon! Many Blessings and All My Love, Teacher Darcie

Drawing

During my time as both an in-person elementary teacher and an online teacher, I have worked with many children using art as a source of expression for each child. Examples of projects, crafts, and activities include: making our own "playdough" and utilizing it to form sculptures, a variety of origami projects some very intricate, craftivities that involve a bit of reading, writing, and art, mobiles, dioramas, pencil drawings, maps, charts, paper projects, recycling projects, DIY gifts, and much, much more! I love to create art with children as it is a valuable tool in allowing them ownership in their learning, encourages them to speak their thoughts, and opinions, ask questions (propelling higher level thinking skills), and it is a way in which each and every child can demonstrate the uniqueness of his or her personality.

Hello. I am Teacher Darcie. I taught as a primary teacher in a public school district before retiring early to care for a family member. I obtained a Minor, Master's, and National Board Certification as a Literacy Specialist. Continuing my education, I achieved an Endorsement as an ESL Literacy Specialist. I held TEFL and TESOL certifications specializing in teaching the art of listening, reading, speaking, and writing to native and non-native beginning/intermediate children acquiring English. I have taught all subject areas with a continuing concentration on Literacy acquisition, refinement, and mastery. I have also had the opportunity to work with other educators as a mentor and as a speaker in workshops provided to other educators presenting best practices and data-driven approaches in teaching literacy acquisition. I welcome the opportunity to work with you and your child, propelling each child to become an independent, strategic, self-confident, critical-thinking, lifelong lover of learning.

Phonics,

Phonics

Having a minor, Master's, and National Board in reading has helped me develop and refine the different strategies and methods that beginning readers utilize. Phonics instruction is just part of a larger picture. Some children are not phonetic learners. Others need direct phonics instruction. In my classroom, we relied on the results of studies by researchers such as P.Cunningham who emphasized most children learn to read by utilizing the 37 most common rimes. These can then help them learn to read and write other words. It will also aide in decoding bigger words later on.
Reading,

Reading

I hold a master's degree in reading as a reading specialist. I am able to take running records to determine a student's instructional level. I am also able to analyze and determine what errors are being made and can work with you to determine content that is appropriate and of interest to your child. I teach students decoding skills side by side with comprehension skills and provide them with "tools" they can use while reading independently. I also tie in writing to reading as the two are intertwined . One helps promote the other. Tapping into a student's interests is key to helping develop these strategies as well as a love for reading which is needed in order to ensure that the strategies, concepts, etc.., are internalized. Together we can formulate an individualized plan for your child that will help him or her become life-long , confident, strategic, learners.
Spelling,

Spelling

In my classroom, we used the Rebecca Sitton approach to spelling , however, we combined it by research from Patricia Cunningham. Utilizing a "working word wall" combined with many "tricks of the trade" allowed my students to memorize and spell "tricky" sight words as well as learn the 37 rimes and how to use them to read and write other words. It also aides in their decoding when they begin to read longer, more complex words.

As reading and writing are interconnected, attaining a minor, a master's, and National Board Certification in reading allowed me to acquire knowledge and skills in teaching young and older children the skills good writers need to possess. The first is a love for writing. The second is using literature to connect writing with reading and providing a model for good writing skills. In my primary classroom, my students participated in writer's workshop in which they worked on different genres of writing progressing through the stages of the writing process including the final publishing of their writing. My students participated in peer editing and conferencing groups, had special writing folders with "tools" to assist them, and even had their published works displayed and shared with the principal! Reading and writing are my passion , and I strive to instill that flame in each of my students.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

As a primary teacher of over 30 years teaching students ranging ages 2 through 18, I have had a variety of experience working with ADD/ADHD students as well as students with other needs . I participated in specific trainings that provided strategies, accommodations and positive approaches. Our district took part in district wide implementation of the PBIS approach which focuses on a positive intervention tier plan individualized to tailor to the student's unique needs. Some of the accommodations I use include: promoting a positive relationship with the student and parents, implementing a daily parent communication plan, providing lots of positive reinforcement, following a predictable routine, preparing for transitions, placing visual cues on desk and in the classroom, allowing movement and brain breaks, providing the student to have items such as a squishy ball, using a visual timer, providing a peer partner, breaking instructions into smaller steps, utilize hands on approaches, provide organizational tools, adapting assignments and testing situations, providing audiovisual support, ensuring the level of instruction is appropriate for the student, extending time limits, eliminating timed tests, and many other strategies that are individualized to fit the student's particular needs in a positive and nurturing manner.

Very Knowledgeable and patient. Good at making learning fun.

Darcie did a great job at connecting with our son. He doesn't usually like tutoring, but Darice took the time to get to know him and made tutoring fun by using props and connecting with him on his level. He doesn't complain about tutoring. She does a great job assessing her students and developing learning plans where they are. She is great at communicating with my wife and I as well as setting academic goals for our son to reach.
