Joe - Drummer - Percussionist

I have been a professional musician for 35 years which have included tours of Brazil and Japan. A few of the artists I have performed are “Renaissance”, Kenny Drew Jr (jazz pianist), David Sancious (Sting, Seal, Eric Clapton), Patrick Moraz (YES), Mark Egan (Pat Metheny) and numerous others.

Joe - Drummer - Percussionist

I have been a professional musician for 35 years which have included tours of Brazil and Japan. A few of the artists I have performed are “Renaissance”, Kenny Drew Jr (jazz pianist), David Sancious (Sting, Seal, Eric Clapton), Patrick Moraz (YES), Mark Egan (Pat Metheny) and numerous others.

I have over 25 years of teaching experience in New York City and Los Angeles. Many of these years have included special percussion workshops for teens: at risk, behavioral issues, special-ed, and autism.

For piano students, I use software that allows my students to hear and see the piano notes I'm playing right on your screen - along with the names of the notes, and where they are on the music staff.

I teach in a nice easy going manner and have lots of patience. If students ask a question, I tend not to answer so quickly, knowing that the students “struggle” for the answer is where the real growth happens. It's all about the journey and not the destination!

I focus on the “Listening” as much as the “Playing”. Also, I place emphasis on demonstrating dynamics, tempo, and “feel” and of course about “space”.
Where you ”don't play” is just as important as where you do play!

Learn how to read chord changes and to compose your own songs. Basic rhythm - Learn note values, reading and more. Piano instruction including improvisation, fundamentals, theory, technique, and more. I am great with kids and encourage lots of patience. I will sometimes use the Bela Bartok Microcosm books for independence and dexterity between the fingers. Ear training exercises which will help the students hear the subtle differences between, major, minor, diminished and augmented chords/harmonies. I have film composer credits on IMDB and my music/keyboard samples are also available upon request.

I have over 25 years of teaching experience in Los Angeles and New York City. Many of these years have included percussion workshops for teens at risk, behavioral issues, special-ed, and autism. For youngsters, I've developed a unique color coded system which makes learning to drum fun and simple. I teach in a relaxed, easy going manner and have lots of patience. When students ask a question, I tend to not answer so quickly, knowing that the students "struggle" for the answer is where the real growth happens. It's all about the journey and not the destination! I focus on the "Listening" as much as the playing. I also place emphasis on demonstrating dynamics, tempo, the "essential drum rudiments" and "feel" - what's known as "pocket" or "groove". Of course attention is paid to "space" in music. Where you "don't play" is just as important as where you do play!
