I've had the pleasure of several types of careers in life sciences, in research, in teaching, and in publishing. My research accomplishments are related to molecular biology and biochemistry of microbes, specifically endospore formation in Bacillus and chromosome structure in thermophiles. This has given me a broad background in general microbiology as well as in-depth experience with molecular biology techniques. I've also spent more than twenty years in the college classroom as an instructor, and am one author of Prescott's Microbiology, published by McGraw-Hill.

I have a PhD in cellular and developmental biology from Harvard, and I've performed original research in molecular genetics for more than 25 years. I've taught college level biology, microbiology, and bacterial genetics at several institutions including The Ohio State University and Capital University.

The trick to helping someone understand science concepts is to figure out what their misconceptions are, adjust those, and then move forward. I believe that science isn't too hard for anyone, we just need to bring it to your level. I've struggled myself with complex concepts like metabolism and PCR. I've learned that the best progress is made when I slow down and take it one step at a time, and then ask as many questions as I need to. I encourage students to do the same.
