Hi!
My name is Monica, and I enjoy helping students gain confidence as they improve their writing skill. It is my hope that you will not only improve the quality of your compositions, but also that you will discover your strengths and individual writing style as we practice together.
Although my undergraduate majors are French and Political Science, my classmates and colleagues have come to me for help with editing and proofreading over the years. While I have primarily served in the school setting for many years, I have found that tutoring is my true passion.
Students often bring me the first draft of their essay or research paper. After reviewing any comments from their instructor, we collaborate, creating a individualized plan to help them improve. In some cases, this involves coaching on structure and organization. Many students are also focused on grammatical structure and proofreading, with special attention on citation formatting (MLA and APA for college students). You can expect me to ask you questions about your learning style and to walk you through the steps in a process, providing clarification of grammar rules and conventions. In my view, students should understand the various ways sentence parts work together instead of simply memorizing a stringent set of rules.
If you believe that I might be the right tutor for you, I encourage you to schedule a brief phone consultation before planning our first lesson. I look forward to helping you plan your educational success!

My bachelors degree from the University of Michigan—Dearborn is in French, and I am certified to teach the language at the secondary level. I enjoy speaking French and practice reading classic French literature to practice and maintain fluency.

Grammar

I have been editing and proofreading professional resumes and college essays for the past 10 years. My experiences as an avid reader and writer have informed me of the best way to convey a message. Whether your writing needs to be more concise or you need some pointers on sentence structure, I can help you learn the rules of grammar as you seek to understand how to properly apply them.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I specialize in editing and proofreading college and post-graduate papers. I am strict when it comes to grammar, because it can “make or break” your paper. I can explain grammar rules, mechanics, and usage to make it easier for you to improve in these areas overall. My approach is to allow students to make the necessary changes to their writing as I provide support. I will walk you through the grammar, pulling examples from your writing so you can recognize where mistakes have been made. Writing is a crucial skill to your studies, so learning to read your paper with an eye for grammar, sentence structure and punctuation is essential.

My educational background and teaching experience has introduced me to study tools and methods that can work for every student. I base my methods on Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory, which focuses 7 learning styles, including: visual/spatial, auditory (sound), linguistic (words), and logical- mathematical (logic and reason), to name a few. I assist students in discovering their unique learning styles and teach them the time management and organization skills needed to support academic growth and achievement.

I have successfully tutored many students in all phases of the writing process. Students come to me with an essay's first draft. Beginning with a critique of the content, I continue providing tips for improving structure, grammar, and walk them through editing and proofreading. "Fine-tuning" to check for concise writing, word choice, sentence structure and spelling allows me to help the student produce their best work, using their own words.

In obtaining my advanced teaching degree introduced me to current and effective methods for teaching writing across the curriculum. My goal is to help you develop writing skills that will make you a more confident writer. I can be your "sideline coach" through the 5 phases of the writing process: pre-writing, 1st draft, revision, editing, and proofreading. I am a strong proponent of pre-writing using graphic organizers, concept maps, and outlines. I've also created custom resources to help you understand grammar conventions and citation formats (MLA, APA). I look forward to working with you!

Very Knowledgeable about Writing styles!

I have an MLA-style 10-page midterm due. I was totally stressing because I only had 3 pages and a short time left to produce the other 7. My professor told me my organization is off in my essays as well as transitioning to the next paragraph. I was desperate for help seeing that the writing center in my school wasn't open the time I needed them. I found Monica on this site and that was a blessing! Monica understood my paper, gave me some redirection, and helped me to produce what I feel is a better essay. I would definitely contact her again for the assistance! She well-spoken, helpful, patient, and I felt comfortable interacting with her.
