Bio

I am a High School teacher who specializes in mathematics and writing but also tutors in many other subjects! I graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Cognitive Science, a concentration in Cognitive Neuroscience, and two Minors: Ancient Egyptian & Near Eastern Civilizations and Cal Teach (Math & Science Education). I have since earned an A.S. in Mathematics equivalency and completed UCB's Cal Teach Credential Program for Secondary Math. I have taught Math 1 & 2, Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, and AP Calc AB.

In the past, I taught a DeCal (UCB class taught by (and for) students) for 3 years on the reading and writing of Middle Egyptian Hieroglyphs. I've also completed field placements in 3rd, 7th, and 8th Grade classes and a 7th/8th Grade after school program. I taught SAT Math prep at Oakland HS for People's Test Preparation Services (PTPS) and Pre-Algebra for Diablo Valley College (DVC)'s College for Kids program. Aside from my main subjects, I also tutor in others like psychology and US history and a variety of test prep topics (e.g. AP, SAT, GED, CHSPE, HESI, TEAS, ASVAB, CBEST, CSET, college entrance, Plumber's Union, etc).

I teach students HOW to learn. In high school, I competed in Varsity sports, Mock Trial, & Model UN while taking AP classes and being in multiple clubs so I can help students to study efficiently! I was also homeschooled K-8 so I can relate to independent study experiences too.

While I am still only offering online tutoring, Wyzant has a great online platform that combines video chat, whiteboard space, screen sharing, and equation editing.

While I am flexible, I currently ask for a 16hr cancellation policy. Cancellations after that point, tardiness over 15 minutes (or repeated tardiness) without prior communication, may result in cancellation fees since I cannot book another student during your slot. This does not mean these amounts WILL be charged, just that I reserve the right to do so if I see fit.

I look forward to helping students achieve their goals!

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have a lot of experience with public speaking through my participation in Mock Trial, Model United Nations, in-class speeches and debates, etc. This semester, I will be Facilitating (essentially teaching) a DeCal (class for students by the students) at UC Berkeley. I have gone through the process or gathering material/data, analyzing the data, synthesizing speeches or arguments, and then perfecting delivery and timing. My presentations have ranged from 30 seconds to 10 minutes depending on the situation. I can help individuals practice their timing, enunciation, and their overall confidence with speaking to a multitude of people. These skills can also benefit people in one-on-one situations and even when they are holding conversations over the telephone.

Corporate Training

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have volunteered in a 3rd Grade Math classroom for 1 semester and have taught two Common Core lessons to those students through the CalTeach program at UC Berkeley. I have several years of experience tutoring Algebra 1 for High School and Middle School students. Through that time, I have seen many different learning styles, attention levels, and exposure to math concepts. I have worked with students who completed Algebra 1 online, through credit recovery programs, and in a traditional classroom setting. I have tutored both traditional Algebra 1 and in Common Core. While I have spent significantly less time tutoring Math for K-8 students, I have been one of the go-to people in my family to help my younger sibling with homework as we were growing up so I do have some experience working with kids. I completed Algebra 1 in Middle School, and then Geometry, Algebra 2 and Precalculus in High School. I received "A's" in all classes. I have also taken a Calculus class in college and will be taking Discrete Mathematics in the Fall.
Reading,

Reading

I love reading and it has always been a hobby of mine. I know that reading a variety of literature types and sources dramatically improves comprehension. Thus, I will incorporate different readings into my tutoring where applicable. I will also work with students to enhance their reading comprehension skills. If there is a particular skill related to reading that the student wants to develop, feel free to let me know and I will try to design lessons that will make them successful.
Spelling,

Spelling

To enhance students' spelling abilities I may combine readings, online activities, games, and tried-and-true methods to remember spelling (e.g. mnemonics, color coding, etc). Vocabulary and spelling are related, although doing well in one does not necessarily mean excelling in the other.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Between homeschooling and public schooling through high school, I always had grades that were some form of an "A". I now attend UC Berkeley. I know how to juggle academics, athletics, and miscellaneous extra curricular activities. I can show students different methods they might employ to stay on top of their material. Methods I may teach include using a timer, reward system, task list, highlighting, Cornell Note-Taking, how and where to seek supplementary materials, and understanding what should ideally be completed before attending classes or meetings with teachers and tutors so that students can learn the most. On the other hand, I can also teach them tricks they might use if they are pressed for time and aren't certain they will be able to devote as much time as they should have for a subject so that they will be able to achieve their personal best within reasonable constraints.

I took AP Gov in high school and passed the AP Test with a score of 5. I think all students should at least have a basic knowledge of how our government and politics function in our lives and I would love to help them achieve that basic understanding. Depending on the subject matter, I might assign videos, transcripts, court cases, and other supplementary materials to help the students succeed.
World History

World History

I took AP World History in High School and a Medieval European History class (focusing on Franks, Merovingians, Carolingians, etc.) in college. In my prior experiences tutoring High School World History, I have gone over homework and created review quizzes based on key concepts with the depth and breadth of the quizzes varying based on the level of detail the students need/want to know. I can also help students improve their reading comprehension and organization of knowledge by analyzing tests via comparisons and contrasts with respect to time, empire/geographic region, people, and events.

I covered the major content from the "New SAT" and administered both collaborative classwork activities and quizzes designed to help students assess their level of understanding and provided homework assignments written in the SAT style to target problem areas.

Writing,

Writing

Writing styles and abilities are influenced by reading, so my tutoring tends to incorporate the analysis of readings and their application in the students' own works. If there is a particular writing skill students wish to enhance, please let me know and I will try to create lessons accordingly. I have been involved in everything from the proofreading of classmates' essays, to Copy Editor for the California Legal Studies Journal, to writing poetry and stories for my own enjoyment. I love reading as much as I love writing, and I hope to be able to help students succeed in their endeavors.

Test Preparation

ACT English,

ACT English

I have helped students prepare for the ACT and SAT English portions by improving techniques and strategies for essay writing and reading comprehension.
ACT Math,

ACT Math

I am a math teacher and tutor who also does a lot of SAT and ACT math tutoring. I help students prepare by reviewing common topics, and questions, identifying the important parts based on a question's formats, and improving comprehension of word problems. This also includes a basic math skills review.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I have helped students prepare for the ACT and SAT Reading portions by improving techniques and strategies for reading comprehension. This includes skim reading, annotation, using context clues, and comparing answers in multiple choice formats.
ASVAB,

ASVAB

I have helped several students prepare for their ASVAB exams- mainly in the Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) and Mathematics Knowledge (MK) sections although I can also assist in Paragraph Comprehension (PC). I can provide extra resources that target difficulties such as understanding word problems, solving for volume, creating multiple linear equations, etc.
CBEST,

CBEST

I have completed exams deemed equivalent to the CBEST by the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing (CTC). In addition, I have helped many students improve both their writing an reading comprehension skills. I've completed field placements in 3rd, 7th, and 8th Grade Math classes, a 7th/8th Grade after school program, and Algebra 1/Algebra 2 classrooms.

STAAR,

STAAR

I can help students develop test taking strategies and study habits that will help them on any test -multiple choice and short answer- including the STAAR. As someone who experienced the STAAR which was a standardized test frequently administered to students in Elementary, Middle, and High School, I am in a good position to help students who wish to improve their own scores on the STAAR and reach mastery for the concepts tested. The STAAR test is mostly comprised of Math and English but also contains specialized Science and History tests which are designed to test state benchmarks. I help students best by identifying what areas need improvement such as content areas or general test taking skills and then I select practice problems that allow them to practice in these areas. I also work with students who have test-taking anxiety and aim to boost their confidence and ability to perform in a timed test environment like that of the STAAR.
TEAS,

TEAS

I have experience preparing students for the TEAS and HESI exam. This includes math drills, reading comprehension, and study strategies. I combine both targeted prep books and supplementary materials to best help my students prepare for their exams. If they have taken the TEAS or HESI before, we also look at the feedback from score reports to determine how to best structure the preparation. I am a UC Berkeley graduate who is currently in the Cal Teach Credential program which is preparing me to teach High School Math meaning I have a lot of experience teaching and presenting content in different ways.

The Best Math Tutor My Daughter Has Had!!

My daughter has struggled with Algebra all through high school. The tutoring was crucial to help my daughter pass her class. Christine was amazing! For the first time my daughter understood the concepts that Christine covered with her. She was able to retain the information her tutor provided. Christine was extremely pleasant, professional, and very accommodating. I would STRONGLY recommend her and would definitely use her again! You won't be disappointed if you choose Christine as your child's tutor. Very, very happy!!

Above and beyond!

Christine has already helped our daughter finish current assignments and is giving extra time to help her catch up. She even went over time, to get to the end of her homework.

So lucky to have found her!

Christine was very kind and made me feel comfortable. It’s difficult for me to ask for help as I feel vulnerable and embarrassed. She was so easy going and so knowledgeable. I’m currently in graduate school trying to pass the mathematics portion of the CSET. I would definitely recommend her!

Christine is a miracle worker!

My daughter has been consistently resistant to tutoring, until now. She comes out of every session with Christine beaming, saying she is finally learning things, that the Pythagorean Theorem isn't nearly as hard as everyone says... Well done, Christine!
