My primary areas of study are philosophy and the psychology of human learning. My teaching style reflects my interests; brute memorization accomplishes little genuine understanding. Instead, my approach encourages pupils to think through, question, and process information. That sort of questioning promotes understand of the subject. Facts are useless without systematization. It’s only when facts are processed that they produce something of real benefit to a student. By trying to answer fundamental questions within a field - by applying their reasoning abilities to the material at hand - students create understanding.

I have been teaching chess for almost a decade. My experience has included coaching and directing after-school programs, instructing and managing summer-camps, and teaching one-on-one private lessons. Several teams I coached won state competitions; others were runners up. Two teams I worked with placed top ten in the nation; one student became the national champion for his grade level. I was vice president of Benedictine University’s philosophy club. As vice president, I often helped students to better understand their assigned readings, to study for exams, and to polish their papers.

It is my goal to help students succeed in their current subjects of study and improve their capabilities as learners. The abilities to read and listen well, to process information logically, and to ask the right questions are key to academic success. Instructors notice these sorts of qualities in their students.

If you have questions or are interested in setting up a trial meeting, I encourage you to contact me. I respond quickly to all messages.

Knowledgeable and kind tutor

Lance taught me concepts my own professor couldn't make me understand. My only regret is not hearing about Lance's tutoring services sooner. I am sure I would have a high A, if not a 100, in my logic class would I have started sooner. He was so patient and non-judgmental. He taught me concepts, guided me through examples, and let me try the rest on my own with his direction and guidance anytime I needed. We finished up early and instead of hanging up he began a new concept to guarantee I got the most out of my session. 10/10 recommend.

Exceptional Tutor!

Lance worked with my college freshman to get him unstuck on a Philosophy essay that my son had labored on unsuccessfully for days. Lance was able to develop his understanding of the material, then help him to outline a framework for the essay. By the end of the session, my son felt ready to tackle the essay with newfound confidence. Lance is truly amazing!

Patient and Willing to Help.

I booked a session with Lance just days before a medical ethics exam I had and he completely clarified some 4 major theories for me in addition to helping me practice argumentation with them. He gives examples and applications that are easy to understand for anyone and he doesn't make you feel bad for asking what you might feel is an ignorant question. Highly recommend!

My F's became A's

I was struggling a lot in my intro to logic class and was concerned about even passing the class. After a few tutoring sessions with Lance, I was making A's. He is incredibly patient and breaks things down in simple terms.

Patient and helpful

I met with Lance to go over my Introduction to Logic class, and he was extremely patient and open to explaining everything. I didn't feel embarrassed to ask questions or ashamed that I didn't know the answers, because he created such a safe space. I will definitely be seeing him again!

Amazing tutor

I have been struggling all semester in my Philosophy 103 course, Lance was able to explain weeks' worth of concepts in our first session. He was willing to slow down with me take time explain concepts in multiple different ways, as well as giving me opportunities to show my learning. Lance was very supportive and never made me feel judged for asking as many questions as I needed. An overall amazing tutor.

If you’re in need of a logic tutor, look no further.

Lance did such an amazing job breaking down truth tables, proofs, and Venn diagram (syllogism). He is extremely patient and I could tell that logic is something he genuinely enjoys. I would highly recommend him as a tutor! Seriously, book him!

This is THE Guy for Logical Proofs

Lance was patient with me as I struggled through my homework. He helped me understand where I went wrong. He read my school book to understand the logic language before meeting with me. Thanks a million!
