Retired from classroom instruction, I taught science and mathematics and coached baseball and both men’s and women’s basketball for more than 30 years at the middle school, high school, and community college levels. During my high school years, I served as the AP Coordinator, Department Head, and teacher of Statistics and Calculus AB & BC. In an effort to address the learning gaps and restricted access to underserved students, I have mentored students to acceptances at colleges and universities including Columbia, Georgetown, George Washington University, Hampton, Harvard, Howard, Grambling, Indiana, John Hopkins, Loyola (Chicago), MIT, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tulane, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Los Angeles, University of Pennsylvania, US Naval Academy, USC, Tuskegee, Yale, and a host of others.

At the middle school level, I implemented and monitored the common core curriculum for public, parochial, and private school systems and prepared students for the Mathematics portion of the Los Angeles Archdiocese's annual Academic Decathlon (ACADECA) competition. In my 6 years of preparing students for the competition, all 7 of my students produced top 7 or above (125 schools) finishes, twice finishing third, 2nd in 2017, and the 2018 year's State Champion. My students almost always received their first choices for high school to include: Archer, Bishop Montgomery, CAMS, Chadwick, Crossroads, Harvard-Westlake, Immaculate Heart, Loyola, Mayfield, Notre Dame, Orange Lutheran, Providence, Ribet, Rolling Hills Prep, Saint John Bosco, and countless more.

As a proud alumnus of The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), my undergraduate and graduate course work included courses in Mathematics, Sociology, Naval Science, Russian Literature and Language, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, and Secondary Education.

In all the aforementioned, I set high standards for my students with a casual but focused (intense) attitude.

I look forward to working with you!

Since earning my B.A. and M.Ed. at U.C.L.A., I have more than twenty years of teaching and coaching experience in a variety of settings to include middle school, high school, and community college. Spelling,

Spelling

Since earning my B.A. and M.Ed. at U.C.L.A., I have more than twenty years' experience in teaching K through 12 students. Many teachers teach and most of us learned to spell by giving students a weekly list of words to practice and then testing them. In truth, the only people that really learned through that method became teachers in later life. Moreover, it's just plain boring. I practice the use of a student's prior knowledge to serve as a guide for new instruction. Then I develop a program based upon his/her stage of development to maximize results. In summary, I select a group of words that demonstrate a particular spelling pattern and sequence these patterns. Students are expected to become "word detectives", engaged in an ongoing attempt to make sense of word patterns and their relationships to one another. Spelling "rules" are not dictated by me for students to memorize. Spelling patterns and generalizations are discovered by students through a variety of resources. Well-versed in the role that both Common Core standards and technology play in student learning, I set high standards in a calm and supportive manner.

Life Saver

Ken has been a life saver for our family! I home-school my 11th grader and the idea of teaching her pre-calculus was daunting. Ken came in and saved the day, by far the easiest way to home school a child. He is patient and works well with shy teens. He has increased her confidence in math. I highly recommend his services.
