Hi, my name is Elena. I got my BA in Philosophy from Princeton University and am currently a philosophy graduate student (ABD) at the University of Pittsburgh (ranked 5th best in the world for philosophy by QS in 2022). I've always enjoyed tutoring and have sought out opportunities for doing that throughout high school and university, helping students of all ages with ESL. In graduate school I started teaching in a more serious way. I have been a TA for five years, teaching recitation sections, helping students with assignments and grading their coursework. I have also designed and taught my own philosophy course and have run various philosophy reading groups. The one-on-one format that tutoring offers is my favorite way of interacting with students, as it allows me to get to know them and tailor my skills to their specific needs. I love to see my students thrive and achieve their goals!

At Princeton, my undergraduate thesis on Nietzsche and Kant won the award for the most distinguished work in the field of aesthetics. Now I am a graduate student in philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh. I have taught philosophy both as a TA and as an independent instructor, covering a wide variety of philosophical topics: ethics, metaphysics & epistemology, social & political philosophy, aesthetics, history of philosophy (Ancient philosophy, Early Modern philosophy, German Idealism, Existentialism etc.) I have grown up in a family of philosophers, where conversation around the dinner table would frequently turn to philosophical topics. Philosophy has thus been part of my life for as long as I can remember and I feel passionate about it. Get in touch with me whether you need help with a philosophy class, would simply like to explore some philosophical topics or want to develop skills like critical thinking, reading comprehension and writing.

Feel free to reach out to me and tell you about your particular needs and goals!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Elena is a remarkable tutor who has a deep understanding of the subject matter and a remarkable ability to be patient. During my course in aesthetics, she provided me with the guidance and support I needed to make a significant transformation from a struggling student to a confident learner. She is exceptionally good at simplifying complex concepts and this made the subject much more accessible to me. Moreover, Elena went above and beyond her role as a tutor, providing me with advice and support on other academic challenges such as participating in class discussions and giving presentations. I am deeply grateful for her support and guidance, and I would highly recommend her as a tutor to anyone seeking to improve their understanding of the subject.

A wonderful mature conversational partner to have in the field

Elena is remarkably systematic and mature as a graduate-level philosophy instructor with a keen eye for details and any subtle weaknesses in arguments. Before we worked together, I was only strictly trained in textual analysis as a history of philosophy student. Our exchanges opened me to a common-sense philosophical way of thinking by teaching me how to transform my organic thoughts into proper argumentative steps. Elena is always equipped with a general understanding of the subject I’m working on; when she is not as familiar with the texts as I do, talking through my interpretation often challenge what I previously thought on the issue and force me to develop new arguments. She is also extremely patient and willing to work on any small flaws in my writings with me. I am very glad to have found her and shared a part of my growth in our common career in philosophy with her.

Best Nietzsche Tutor

She was able to answer every question I had. Very knowledgeable would definitely recommend. I was able to take many notes on what she was talking about to add to my paper.

Super helpful and an expert in her work

I felt like I was in good hands with Elena. She helped me understand complex philosophical topics. She was very knowledgeable about the philosophers I was studying and when she didn't know about a philosopher, she prepared for the session by researching. Her insight was amazing and best of all, she is a very kind-hearted person.

Elena G, demonstrates an expansive understanding of Philsophical topics and even on the few she has not read on has the gifted the ability to read up quickly and understand content efficiently. She helped improve my writing and what I wanted to convey in my piece on Spinoza. 5 stars!
