I graduated from Caltech with Honors in Applied Mathematics and did my thesis in Information Theory. I was a TA for all three core math classes (head TA for the junior), which covered Single and Multi-Variable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Transforms, and Complex Analysis. I was an Instructor (not a Professor!) for their graduate level Information Theory class.

I ran Caltech's secondary school outreach program teaching math, physics, and SAT prep. Over three decades I have tutored countless students one-on-one in a variety of STEM topics. This has ranged from high school Algebra to Group Theory algebra, and even rarer topics like Graph Theory and Cryptography.

I prefer online sessions. To get started we'll need the syllabus, textbook, and homeworks for the course, to clarify your goals and topics for each session. I am particularly adept at helping advanced students excel. For regular students, I assign additional exercises to accelerate their progress.

What sets me apart from other tutors are my real world accomplishments. I have worked for all the national labs, done classified research for the US government, participated in Silicon Valley startups, and been a consultant in high demand for a decade. I've distilled the best practices for what makes people successful and desire to pass it on to future generations.

Thus, I am interested in both tutoring and mentoring. For tutoring, I have students work through as much of a problem as they can on their own, teaching them in real time where needed, and striving to get them to high independent performance. For mentoring, I teach productive "self-talk" that enables them to break down issues into manageable pieces, then how to leverage resources to become more effective as well as make things more efficient. I am an Aristotle looking for some Alexanders/dras to mentor, to help make them great. I look forward to meeting you soon.

Discrete Math

Most of my math research has been in Information Theory, which deals in discrete mathematics like combinatorics, number theory, error-correcting codes, matrices, linear and abstract algebra, and random variables. I'm also a top notch programmer with expertise in computation, algorithms, numerical analysis, image processing, and performance. There's often overlap between the discrete math theory and programming practice.

Excellent, knowledgeable, and highly-vested tutor

While Kim L. is new to Wyzant, he has tutored my daughters for years, mostly helping with math. Kim is great! What makes him a cut above the normal tutor is how much he invests in understanding the needs of your child and how best to address those needs as a team. In addition to teaching the subject matter, he diagnoses how your child learns and what needs to be focused on to meet your and your child's learn goals. For example, he helps figure out whether they need assistance focusing, developing more self-motivation, or getting greater understanding of the subject. As far as subject matter, Kim L.'s greatest strength is science and math given his love and enthusiasm for those topics. But he is also strong in developing better communication and truly believes in the whole person approach to studies. He is very good at find multiple ways to explain math and science so that he can fit the instruction to the best way your child learns. Kim is diligent, enthusiastic, trustworthy, and a top notch tutor!
