As a Rhodes College graduate, high school teacher, and current University of Memphis graduate student, Andrew has had many experiences in teaching chemistry. Having earned a 5 out of 5 on the AP Chemistry exam, a 200 out of 200 on the Praxis: Chemistry Subject Test, Andrew values the importance of a good education and shares that experience with his students. With students ranging from an eight-year old earth science student to an Ivy League graduate, Andrew has effectively taught science by owning the lessons and putting the ideas in a real-life context that makes sense and makes science come to life.

Andrew has held faculty positions at Rhodes College and taught as a teaching assistant at the University of Memphis, in addition to handling the incomparable workload of a full-time high school teacher. Courses have ranged from Physical Science, Honors Chemistry, and AP Chemistry for high school to General Chemistry I & II with labs, Organic Chemistry I & II with labs, and Chemistry Recitation for undergraduates. Andrew has assisted in training programs for public school teachers in developing reliable instructional reactions for teachers to perform in the classroom.

Andrew has given guest presentations in St. Louis, Boston, Hattiesburg, Starkville, Portland, Las Vegas, and Kyoto on his research. His primary focus has been Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Labs --POGIL for short-- whereby experienced students craft and practice their own, final lab procedure as a culmination of their knowledge.

Andrew's approach to tutoring is to break down a concept to a fundamental, basic level and then piece it back to together as it pertains to rigorous problem solving.

Processing data is not easy. MS Excel makes it much easier, but everyone has to learn it from square one. I've used Excel for 10 years now to process data, perform repetitive calculations, keep organized data sets to update, and render charts and graphs. Since there is a long list of Excel functions, I start a lesson by focusing on the most relevant spreadsheet type for the student and exploring the appropriate functions from there.

I earned perfect scores on the AP Chemistry exam in high school and Praxis Chemistry exam for science teachers. The Praxis Chemistry exam also does not allow the use of a calculator during the exam. I have taught general and organic chemistry courses at Rhodes College and University of Memphis. I understand the requirements for mastering chemistry and I show exactly what information is best to remember and WHY it's important to memorize. I contextualize concepts in a real, practical way so that all of my students recognize the value of each lesson. Within the first lesson I will speak to a student's strengths and focus on areas that need growth by offering a proactive action plan before the subsequent lesson.
Physics,

Physics

Physics is a math intensive, rigorous subject. I have taught high school physical science --which covers the basics of physics-- and I have taken two semesters of Physics courses as a Rhodes undergraduate, where I later served as an adjunct faculty member. For me, teaching physics involves many real life scenarios to make the equations and calculations more interesting. This has the added benefit of being recalled more easily later.

I am a current graduate student at the University of Memphis. I have passed my 4 cumulative exams with points satisfactory towards the PhD program. Additionally I have taken courses in Organic Synthesis, Intermediate Organic Chemistry, Advanced Organic Chemistry, and Polymer Chemistry with A's and B's in all classes. I have taught 4 lab sections in general chemistry and organic chemistry at University of Memphis and Rhodes College.

Great Tutor!

Andrew tutored my son in honors chemistry and he was absolutely patient and so knowledgeable in the subject.... Has amazing teaching skills!

Cindy, 2 lessons with Andrew

Very clear and helpful. Highly recommend!

Andrew is a great tutor, he's really good about communicating with you about setting up times. He tutored me in organic chemistry and always had a clear answer to every question I asked. When someone is teaching you it's important to feel confident that they know their stuff and Andrew was knowledgeable enough to always articulate clearly and simply what he was teaching. Some of the topics we covered in our lessons were different spectra(IR, NMR, Mass), chair conformations, and TONS of mechanisms. I highly recommend him as a tutor.

Tutor responded:

Molly really understates the hurdles she got through in Organic this year. She excelled at a brief summer course in a flipped classroom and sought help from the moment she saw the struggle this summer. She was able to clearly present the most challenging concepts and problems so I could devise the best strategy to maintain her success. I'm confident her success will continue in her studies; I look forward to her ultimately pursuing an advanced degree and knowing her hard work will be in a clinical setting improving people's lives.
