Hello,
My name is Malone and I am an Art Instructor with over twenty-five years of experience teaching diverse forms of visual arts techniques, methods, and subjects and who enjoys teaching students of all ages.
I live in the Fort Worth, Texas area. I hold a Master of Fine Arts degree and a Diploma in Graphic Arts. While much of my personal artwork is traditionally realistic and representational, I appreciate and am fluent in all styles and schools of artistic expression.
In addition to being an art instructor, I am a full-time self-employed professional illustrator and fine artist. As an illustrator, I create covers and interior art for books, graphic design, and I have created cartoon artwork for companies such as Marvel and DC Comics. My work has received numerous awards including one from the New York Society of Illustrators. As a fine artist, I am a commissioned portrait painter and I also create personal artwork for gallery representation which consists of a wide range of subject matter.
I have been an Adjunct Art Professor with the Tarrant County College District where I taught Drawing and Painting courses from Spring semester 2010 until the 2019 Summer semester. Currently, I teach at another local college.
I have assisted a number of my students with the development of their art portfolios which has not only helped them to be admitted into the art school of their choice, but has enabled many of them to receive scholarships, as well.
I have been a tutor with WyzAnt for some time now and this has been a wonderful learning experience for my students and truly one of the most rewarding experiences of my life!
I will be very happy to share with you examples of my artwork, examples of artwork created by my students, as well as to explain my specific teaching approaches. Most importantly, I will discuss how I can enable you to accomplish your particular artistic pursuits.

Art is my passion, and I would love to share that passion with you!

Sincerely,
Malone

Art

Art History,

Art History

I believe that a knowledge of Art History is extremely important to better understand mankind and the diverse cultures of our world. I have been a lifelong student of Art History and I co-majored in Art History while working toward my Master of Fine Arts degree. I am extremely knowledgeable of all Art Historical time periods and artistic genres, as well as of the artists who contributed to them. As a public high school Art Teacher, I very successfully taught Basic and Advanced Placement Art History. And, I also had the wonderful opportunity to teach High School Art History in the prestigious International Baccalaureate program. I always strive to not only give my students an understanding of the development of Art from Prehistory through today, but to impart a working knowledge of the relevant styles and techniques used to create art. In order to accomplish this, I often supplement my lectured information with related, fun hands-on art activities which enable my students to better comprehend the concepts and methodology which artists have used to express themselves throughout the ages. I discuss the theories of Aesthetics: how and why different cultures have formed and expressed their own standards of beauty. Additionally, and very importantly, I teach approaches to Critiquing Artwork so that my students can make and present informed opinions regarding works of art, regardless of style or technique. My goal is for all of my Art History students to be able to intelligently and to eloquently discuss Art History whether it is for a research writing assignment, a verbal classroom presentation, to prepare for an exam, a museum visit, in a gallery setting, during friendly discourse, or simply for personal edification.
Art Theory,

Art Theory

For many years, I have had great success with introducing the concepts of formal Art Theory to my students which enables them to clearly and aesthetically express their own individual artistic statements. I emphasize to them that the use of the Elements of Art in conjunction with the Principles of Design is the means to making their artistic statements regardless of the style, content, genre, or subject matter of their particular works. Additionally, I share with my students approaches to Art Criticism Operations which not only allow them to use their aesthetic awareness to make informed opinions about art created by other artists but which also serves as a means of evaluating their own efforts during, as well as after the resolution of their artwork.
Drawing,

Drawing

I pride myself in teaching time honored, traditional Drawing concepts in a contemporary manner. I use approaches to drawing which enable my students to express themselves through the use of Line, Shape, Value, Size, Direction, Texture, and even Color! I personally work in diverse technical modes and genres of self expression. And, I have had the wonderful opportunity to study with and be mentored by renowned drawing instructors and artists such as Glenn Vilppu, Burne Hogarth, Gene Colan, and Joseph Sheppard. I was an honor graduate of the renowned Kubert School, and I have been a professional practitioner and teacher of cartoon art for more than twenty years. I will always truly enjoy sharing with others all of the many disciplines which I have learned. But my ultimate goal as a teacher is to help my students to eventually become their own teacher.
Painting

Painting

Regardless of style or subject matter, I know that the principles and techniques of Painting can be taught and can be learned by anyone who is willing to patiently persevere while practicing traditionally time honored procedures, methodology, and approaches. Learning in this manner will serve as the springboard for anyone's chosen means of personal self expression. And, I have always been amazed at how effectively these principles and techniques produce their intended aesthetic results when applied with diligence, knowledge, and understanding. My paintings have garnered prestigious awards, have been shown in many galleries, and have been featured on the covers of numerous books. They are created using the very concepts, principles, and techniques which I teach. While much of my work tends to be traditionally realistic, my intention is to help each of my students find and express his or her own individual artistic voice. I have had the wonderful experience to study with and to be mentored by renowned artists, among them the master oil painter and pastelist Daniel E. Greene, as well as Boris Vallejo and his wife Julie Bell, both of whom are acknowledged as two of the world's top Fantasy Illustrators.

A Superb Mentor

For the past few weeks now, Mr. Malone has been giving me lessons in anatomy, value, rendering, perspective, and he has also been helping me build my portfolio for entry into an art school. I am extremely impressed by his body of work and experience, and I can hardly find the words to express how grateful I am to have the chance to work with an artist such as himself. It's been a truly invigorating experience, and has helped rekindle my passion for drawing, painting, and art in general. For the line of work I'm interested in going into (animation/game art), he's the perfect fit for my needs as a growing artist. For anyone interested in finding a teacher who will sit down with you one-on-one, and very patiently explain everything from the basics to refined technique and practice, and also if you just want a highly experienced mind to pick for advice, I strongly recommend Mr. Malone S. You will not regret it.

Great lesson !

In this lesson, Malone and I discussed how to measure the figure using both head lengths and head widths. This helped me accurately proportion the figure, especially when it came to proportioning the top half of the body compared to the bottom half. It was a great lesson !

Great lesson !

In this lesson, Malone and I discussed proportions further. He explained the importance of boney landmarks when it comes to accurately proportioning the human figure. After that, we discussed capturing gesture. We went over the line of action. We used references of the human figure and he explained the line of action, the sweeps of different parts of the figures, and how to build on top of that using both basic forms and organic ones. This lesson was great, it helped me understand why I struggled with certain things while drawing the figure. Now, I already see a difference in my figure drawing. They are more fluid and not as stiff. I’m happy to be making progress! It’s all thanks to Malone’s teachings, he has really helped me a lot. A really good teacher.

Great and thorough teacher

Today, Malone began helping me understand the basic construction of the figure. We mainly focused on the torso in both the front and rear view, as well as in a foreshortened form. Before today’s lesson, Malone had given me advice on how to correct my mistakes when it came to drawing in proportion, which I then took another go at and did much better than the first attempt. Malone is an instructor who breaks things down and makes them easy to understand. From today’s lesson alone, I have a much better concept of the basic structure of the human figure than I’ve personally ever had. Malone has been a wonderful instructor to work with so far. I can’t wait to progress even further on the next lesson.

Great and thorough teacher

Malone is a very thorough instructor who helped me understand the importance of the basics of shapes and forms, as well as putting them into perspective. It was a wonderful lesson, as he made everything easy to understand and also implemented how to apply the forms to construct the human figure. I really look forward to future lessons !

Experienced and engaging teacher

Malone taught me how to use certain techniques to apply to artwork, particularly my drawings. The lesson was easy to understand and I was surprised how Malone was able to cover so much information into one lesson. I am excited to see how much my understanding of drawing techniques better will help me to improve my portfolio. Malone is definitely the perfect art teacher for me and I would recommend him 100 percent to anyone, whether or not they are a beginner.

Great Instruction and Engaging

Malone worked with my teen daughter. Very patient and explained so much to her in a way she could understand and then attempt on her own with positive support.

Extremely professional

I have had two lessons with Mr. Malone, and I have been very impressed with both his work and his teaching style. He makes sure things are clear for you. I have learned more in two lessons than I thought I would. I'm confident that my skills will get much better as I work with him. I definitely recommend him.

A tutor who seems to love teaching

This was my daughter's first art lesson with Mr. S. She has no art background and is truly starting from scratch. Mr. S. has a great attitude about beginners. For a man who has taught this material thousands of times, he worked with my daughter with freshness and enthusiasm. My daughter really liked the pace, format and encouragement. She has practiced what she learned each day since the lesson and I can already see some confidence forming.

Profound Knowledge

He provides very good instruction, and makes sure to fill each session with profound artistic knowledge. For the first few lessons he informs you of what you will need for the next coming sessions, and you are taught the basic foundations of drawing. He teaches the six principles of design, and you are given some sort of assignment to do on your own by the next session. You will immediately notice an enhancement in your artistic skill after your first few lessons.
