Hello there. Excessive jargon, challenging concepts, and steep learning curves are just a few of the reasons why pursuing a path of science is an arduous journey. However, it's not a journey you need take alone. I did my undergraduate work in psychology and neurobiology, and a masters degree in integrated biology, with an emphasis on neurobiology, all at University of Iowa. I have a research position now at the University but I really miss teaching. I taught both introductory and advanced biology courses in grad school and a biology course for non-science majors while I was an undergrad. Additionally, I tutored many, many biology related courses 3 of my 4 years of undergrad. For me, seeing a student finally understand something with which they have struggled and knowing I can make a difference are what I find most rewarding. Since I did my studies here, I often had the same challenges my students faced which, I think, proved valuable for both my students and myself. For them, I think it put them at ease to know that they are not the only one to struggle in a class or on a particular subject. For me, even though my grades were not always stellar, my self worth and satisfaction was more dependent on how my own students fared than my own.

I should also add that I did tutoring through TRIO and mentored high school students through Upward Bound, so I'm quite comfortable with students from any background imaginable and hope to ensure that students can feel as comfortable with me. Additionally, I want to have fun while I teach and my evaluations suggest many of my students enjoyed my classes as well. I have the most experience with college students, but I do have some high school tutoring experience (including AP biology)

My primary focus is cellular and molecular biology. For me, the beauty of biology is there is, and has been, so much diversity of life at the large scale; at the small molecular scale, there are a great many similarities that connect us to all life that is, has ever been, and will likely

Writing,

Writing

The largest challenge I see in writing is that people write as if making a transcript of how they speak in real life, and that simply won't do. My writing background is primarily in scientific writing, with an emphasis on biomedical sciences and related fields, but all types of formal writing have similar expectations: the writer is clear, organized, and concise. How something is written is just as important -- maybe more so -- than the content. My work previously with students who need help in writing/editing is to focus the main purpose(s) of the work, organizing it in such a way that it "flows" logically from one point to another, and identify the appropriate amount of detail necessary to convey the information required.

Biology,

Biology

My primary area of expertise is cellular and molecular biology. While that may seem daunting, it is at this level that I can truly appreciate how interconnected life is. I use this appreciation and apply it to my philosophy of teaching; namely, that students learn more, become more confident, and generally perform better when they are encouraged to see how concepts connect and interact with each other and not as discreet bits of information with funny sounding words.

Science

Anatomy,

Anatomy

My primary background is cell and molecular biology, but I have had anatomy and physiology courses. In undergrad, I tutored many students in both of those subjects, as well. I also taught a biology class for non-science majors which, coincidentally, had a strong anatomy component, so I'm well aware of the barriers to understanding that students face.
Biochemistry,

Biochemistry

While my training is in neurobiology, a very strong biochemistry background is required to fully appreciate the intricacies of our brains function. Biochemistry is a field where the interactions between molecules of life exert their influence over it, whether it be the beating of a heart, turning on or off a gene, or skipping on eating an extra donut. I help students identify these networks, show them how they are regulated, encourage them to find patterns, and apply those concepts to new topics to gain understanding in the material, and confidence within themselves.

Genetics,

Genetics

Genetics is one of the main themes of biology. A full year of genetic courses was required for my undergraduate degree and was also required for my graduate degree. I have experience in Mendelian Inheritance, molecular genetics, transcriptional regulation, transgenics, biotechology, and epigenetics. Furthermore, I use transgenic mouse models in my own research to ask questions about alterations to neurodevelopment and how those changes may be associated with psychiatric illness later in life.
Physiology,

Physiology

Tutored for 2 years Human Physiology, an introductory course for health and physiology majors, sports sciences majors, athletic training, and pre-physical therapy, among others. Taught Human Biology, which is a non-science majors biology course, for 2 years that had a heavy physiology component.

Truly knows his stuff!

Robert is an excellent tutor. He helped me through my college level Cell Biology course and was a large part of my academic success in the class. He was flexible in working around my schedule and is happy to adjust the depth level of his explanations according to what topics needed more or less focus. He is clearly passionate about biology and frequently used his laboratory experience to make connections from what I was learning in class to the real world. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone wanting to better understand content that they are finding overwhelming.

From failing to acing

I started working with Robert after a series of flunked tests. I was at risk of losing my scholarship and my grip on the semester. He was flexible with my schedule and found times to work with me. He was patient and understanding. He helped save my semester and my scholarship.

Very knowledgeable bio tutor

Robert is very knowledgeable in his area. My daughter likes her. He is a great teacher and loves what he does. We will schedule more lessons when she learns more biology in the future.

Great teacher, very knowledgeable and patient

Robert was helping me with my statement of purpose for graduate school and with my CV. Initially I felt a little lost in the process and didn’t know where to begin. When I had my first session with Robert, he did such a great job at explaining what graduate program committees are looking for and shared helpful tips on how to make my statement stronger and how to organize/structure my CV in a professional way. He is extremely knowledgeable, but at the same time he explains things in a manner that makes sense, and I really like his teaching style. Aside from being a great teacher, Robert is very friendly and patient, as he answered every question I had in great detail. I am very happy with the outcome of our sessions, and I am extremely grateful for all the help I received. It definitely helped with all the anxiety associated with the application process for graduate school.

Excellent and knowledgeable professor

Every session has been very helpful and I have a much better understanding of these difficult topics. Dr. Robert is really funny and knows how to take abstract topics and simplify them to make sense.

Funny, knowledgeable and patient.

He truly helped mu daughter to grasp the larger concepts. He put it into bite-size pieces for her and he gave cogent, relatable examples for bio that a teen could understand. She was smiling after studying bio for the first time all semester and that was worth it!
