I am interested in teaching writing, literature and/or drawing

I love the English language. I find magic in the written word and don't want writing to become a lost art.

I love the English language. I find magic in the written word and don't want writing to become a lost art.

I was a working artist for over 25 years, exhibiting my work at Universities and other venues throughout the western United States.

I have been a published author for over 15 years. My work has been published in numerous magazines, I currently having a children's book on the market. At this time I am working with an agent and editor on a major book about the animal sanctuary I run.

For the past few years, my stories and essays have been published in Southern Arizona newspapers under the heading "The Animals We Live With."

I began drawing as well as writing poetry and prose at a very early age. I encourage kids to write about the areas they are most interested in, to write as though they were simply speaking to a friend or family member. I also stress the importance of reading in order to become familiar with the written word.

Drawing is the basis for all visual art. I have worked in and can teach various media (charcoal, pencil, pen and ink etc.) and encourage working from life as well as from imagination.

Education:
Undergraduate work: San Francisco Art Institute
Graduate work: Arizona State University

Adjunct Faculty, for a Community College system from 1991-1995
Have taught art privately, on and off, over the past 30 years.

I have been a fine art painter since 1973 when I graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute. I have shown extensively throughout the western United States and have my work archived in both California and at the Smithsonian in Washington DC (with the California Surrealists of the 1970-80's.) I am primarily a figurative oil painter but have worked with enamel paints, acrylics, gouache. I am also adept at multiple drawing techniques, a prerequisite for painting. I am able to teach color theory, perspective, anatomy, life drawing. I have worked extensively with the chemistry of paint and with building canvases and other painting surfaces which will withstand the tests of time.

Reading

Reading is the key to learning. It opens the door to writing and the exploration of any subject of interest. As I writer I read constantly. I believe that in order to enable reading comprehension, the subject must be of interest to the young person. Often instead of asking the student to write a report about what they learned I encourage them to use other forms of creative expression: art or poetry or any other form which will enable the student to express what they have read and learned. The most important part of education is learning how to research and grow. Reading is primary to this endeavor.

I have been a published writer for more than 20 years. I currently have a small business that, among other things, helps people create the written word and communicate exactly what they want to impart in a cohesive manner. I have done a lot of editing for academia as well as the general public.
