After a master's degree in Mathematics and Biochemistry, I was awarded two competitive national fellowships to teach for 4 years in a European university and study for a PhD in Biology and Biochemistry. After graduating with highest distinction, I took a position as a Postdoctoral fellow at UNC-Chapel Hill, where I undertook a 5-year research project in Biology and Biochemistry, which received a U.S. federal grant from the National Institutes of Health. I was then promoted to Research Assistant Professor, continued to teach Biology and Biochemistry at UNC for 4 years, and was the award winner of a year-round in-house oral presentation research contest in my Department.

Working with positive and negative numbers (Arithmetic) is a pre-requisite before studying Algebra which introduces the notion of variables (when a symbol represents numbers). Too many students have not acquired these fundamental knowledges, and the negative impact is also seen many years later in high school and college. Pre-Algebra is about mastering the sets of numbers and the order of operations they are going to be involved in: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division. Subtractions, and specially divisions which can take the form of a fraction, a mixed number or a decimal are what causes the most issues. Exponents, Square roots and Absolute values are concepts that need to be clearly explained as they are source of confusion that can last for a long time. When the four operations are fully understood, then comes the time to work with Percents and word problems with Fractions, Decimals and Percents. At this stage of the curriculum, students found difficult how to translate English language into Mathematical language, and they need proper guidance on how to address these questions. This type of translation will come back later with PSAT and SAT tests, as a prerequisite to successfully enter college. Basic Geometry will then encompass the use of Arithmetic to find out how to measure, calculate and recognize different shapes in 2 and 3 dimensions. Dr. Patrick helped my son with his AP Chemistry preparation over many lessons during the 2018-19 academic year. In the beginning, we tried several tutors, many of which were excellent. But, from the very first lesson to the very last one, we were confident that Dr. Patrick was the best tutor for my son due to his solid teaching experience, deep knowledge of the subject and excellent temperament for the role. He has a friendly, professional, no-nonsense demeanor. We found him to be meticulous in his teaching and constructive in the advice he provided. He was always supportive, encouraging and gave invaluable insights regarding what the examiners were looking for in their answers. If you are looking for a quick, superficial review of the main concepts in AP Chemistry, perhaps Dr. Patrick is not the right one for you. He is in-depth and thorough and will not give platitudes just to make you feel good if he believes you haven’t yet “got it”. But, if you are looking for someone who will try hard to ensure that you really understand the concepts, then I don’t know of anyone better than Dr. Patrick--he is simply first-rate.

I am a college student on the pre-med track, and I reached out to Dr. Patrick for help on chemistry. He goes into depth on each topic and ensures there are no confusions when teaching.
