I was delighted this week when one of my students said "I like working with you because you make learning fun!" That is my goal in working with a student - to make it fun, because that is when learning surges forward.

My individualized tutoring uses lesson plans based on the individual learner’s strengths and interests. I use early sessions getting to know the learner and doing some basic assessment to determine their strengths and weaknesses. We build upon the strengths to address weaknesses. Examples of interest based tutoring: lessons for a 10 year old sports enthusiast might include reading about their favorite player, or watching a game and writing a report about it. Lessons for a 7 year old princess fan might include writing a story about her favorite character. Of course, I also work with your child’s school curriculum materials as well.

I am a retired Methodist minister, mother of three grown sons, grandmother of 8, Cub Scout leader, former teacher, and lifelong student. I have a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and two Master’s degrees from Christian Theological Seminary. Before my ministry career I taught high school and junior high science and English.

I formerly have tutored both children and adults at 14th & Chestnut Community Center in Terre Haute IN. I have also worked with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years. I am qualified by education and experience to teach reading, language arts, math, science and social studies, pre-K through 12.

Drawing upon my background in counseling and my experience with children and youth, I help each learner build self-esteem and confidence. I encourage them to take responsibility for their own learning as they grow in their ability to do this. My students soon realize that I care as much about them as a person as about the subject matter we are working on. I sincerely want them to discover the excitement and joy of learning!

I will welcome the opportunity to sit down with you and discuss the learning needs of your child or yourself.

Phonics,

Phonics

In addition to my extensive work with children, I have tutored adult learners for ten years using a multi-sensory phonics based approach. I am currently using the Orton Gillingham method with young readers who are struggling. This method is recommended for children who learn differently, especially those identified as dyslexic. Hearing, saying, seeing, and writing are all used to help a child learn basic decoding skills necessary for reading. I use a variety of learning experiences including games and large muscle exercises in addition to "paper and pencil" work.

I encourage the reading of recommended, age-appropriate literature.

Writing

I learned to write well when I was a senior in high school. With two graduate degrees, I have written many academic papers. I can help students in organizing their material and documenting research. I can work with either APA or MLA formatting. I give special attention to sentence structure which clearly expresses the writer's ideas. I can assist from the initial conception through research, writing, and the final revision of a paper.

Phyllis is a great tutor!

Phyllis is a very knowledgeable and well trained tutor! She is very patient and knows how to make the lessons fun and engaging. She is great with redirecting my 7 year old back to the lesson if she gets distracted. Hadley's only been to 3 sessions with Phyllis, and she's already learning, gaining confidence, and excited to come and earn her stickers for working hard. You won't be disappointed if you choose Phyllis!

Very encouraging

My daughter easily gets discouraged, not once did she get frustrated in her session with Phyllis, she had a gentle way of keeping her working and not feeling frustrated. I was super impressed listening in. This was our second tutor and the difference was night and day!
