Bio

I am a conservative, caring teacher who delights in the moment when the understanding is shown through sweet eyes of wonder and delight. Learning accomplishments add an empowering that only grows more and more delightful as learning turns into knowledge, and knowledge turns into wisdom. With wisdom, life opens up to joy and success. Every person is gifted; they just need to hook deep into their potential and learn to conquer any barriers that stand in their way. I hope to be an advocate...

I hope to be an advocate and help in that adventure.

I have been a teacher in many venues. I have taught in schools and in libraries. I have only taught "word classes," such as Spanish, grammar, creative writing, and penmanship. I have helped children with homework after school and taught home-school classes. I was the director of a small public library for almost seven years, where I created and led all the adult, teen and children programming. I love to help those who struggle with English to feel more empowered by the words they win with more and more practice. Any work with anyone falling in love with books and reading is my favorite work.

I have led many book clubs and reading programs.
I have taught and led Sunday Schools and Vacation Bible Schools for many years.
I have been a speaker, preacher and encourager with all levels of "listeners."
I have many, many years' experience as a secretary, bookkeeper, and office manager.
I love learning and will never think I am finished. I continue to sign up for college classes, workshops of various subjects and read and study every spare minute. There is so much out there to enjoy learning.

Come learn with me. I am like a grandmother figure, and full of fun and nurturing. We will look, learn and laugh. Life has so much to offer, and things that come along and feel like brick walls in our way to what we need in our lives - well, we will refuse to stop at those things. We will either break down that wall or climb right over it. I will help you. I wouldn't want anyone to miss o

When my grandfather came to the United States at the age of 12, he could only speak German. Still school age, he had to start school with only English-speaking teachers and students. Not only was he ridiculed for only speaking German, but he failed his school work. With such discouragement, he was about to quit trying. Then a neighbor offered to help him learn English and accomplish his school work. The generosity of that neighbor changed my grandfather's entire future. He went on to be a preacher for 65 years and enjoyed life in America to its fullest. I would like to be that kind neighbor for you. I am offering my tutoring help. Let's help YOUR future. I have taught others ESL/ESOL...all one-on-one. That works well because we can go just as slowly as you need, or skip the parts you already know well. I have taught both adults and children and we have a good time. Let me know if you would like to at least meet me and see if it feels like a good fit. Let's try it!

I home-schooled my children and continue to teach school age children through the public library. I am proficient and can happily and readily teach/tutor English, Reading, Literature, Spelling, Penmanship, History, Geography, and Art. I enjoy teaching math subjects, but I have to add quite a bit of humor to make that fun for my students. Life is like that -- some things come with joy, others you learn to plow through.

I love words and teaching our wonderful language. However, the English language is so challenging that for some it takes the fun out of communication. As I have taught phonics, I have seen people of all ages relax with their struggle to communicate. Phonics is a great tool. When used correctly, it can be what makes the "light come on" for a confused student. My own son wrote me this sweet note one day when I was getting weary: "Donte kwit tring, mom." I hope you will keep "tring," as well.

Words are wonderful. I love working with them and have experience being a writer, a speaker, a preacher, and a teacher. I get great joy from using words. I do know, however, everyone does not feel the same. The English language can be very frustrating. So many tenses, exceptions, choice of formal or "acceptable" -- what is a person to do? Well, you can't just give up. Correct use of grammar and the manipulating of English words can make or break your future. If it is school, a job application or the clear communication you need for managing in this culture, improvement in "English" is ALWAYS a good thing. Can I help?

Speech

Speech

You can be an effective speaker. Don't be afraid. I can help you. I have taken college and career courses in public speaking. I especially loved my college courses where I had the new experience of speaking with a Power Point presentation. Later that year, I was asked to speak at an international library association, and all I had learned came in very handy. I have preached several times, and that uses all the same speaking skills I have learned. I have been the key speaker at state and regional library associations (large gatherings) and at ladies' meetings (small gatherings). Great experiences await you, too! As we learn together, I will help make sure you: 1)Tell people what you will say. 2)Say it. 3)Tell them what you said. Sounds funny, I know... and of course, there is much more I can help you learn along the way, but believe me, it will be fun. You will learn to evaluate your audience, have stage presence, gesture, and in the end you will have said what you came to say, and better still, it will be remembered. Want to try it?
