Hi. I’m Paula. I’m an American accent coach. I teach English so you’re understood the first time you speak. My expertise is with speakers of Mandarin, Japanese and Korean. However, I have also taught speakers of Vietnamese, Farsi, Spanish and Hebrew. Hi. I’m Paula. I’m an American accent coach. I teach English so you’re understood the first time you speak. My expertise is with speakers of Mandarin, Japanese and Korean. However, I have also taught speakers of Vietnamese, Farsi, Spanish and Hebrew. My students often have excellent reading and writing skills in English, but may struggle with spoken English, and listening to English at school or work.

Is speaking English difficult for you? If so, you’re not alone. Many students feel they didn’t receive enough training in pronunciation. Furthermore modern English has enormous variety due to its development from a mix of languages. English spelling doesn’t help either, with its many exceptions.

Because of my master’s level training in communication, I can explain exactly what to do with your mouth, tongue and the air to produce unfamiliar sounds. I teach linked and reduced words in conversation for greater speech clarity. I also teach the fluency skills of stress, rhythm, and intonation, which are the greatest determiners of understandable spoken English.

I received certification with Compton P-ESL (Pronouncing English as a Second Language). I was already an experienced teacher when I volunteered at an ESL program in San Jose, California in 2011. During my years at ESL, I taught my own English pronunciation classes from 2012-2018, with 15-18 students each semester. In 2018, I moved my classes online. I have taught over 1,200 lessons to groups and individuals. Many of my students have been professionals in Silicon Valley, from companies such as Google, Apple, Samsung, Nvidia, Intel, etc.. Students report that my lessons help them speak English more clearly, and also understand English better.

I look forward to helping you increase your skill and confidence in spoken English.

ESL/ESOL

In 2011, after a 22-year-career as a speech-language pathologist, I volunteered for ESL. My first class was advanced international students, focusing on discussion of American culture, English language and pronunciation. The next year I rotated through all the classes (beginners, intermediate and advanced) and taught pronunciation lessons, as well as trained their teachers how to help students speak clearly in English. In years 3 – 8, I hosted my own pronunciation classes, with 15-18 students each semester. It was during my time at ESL that students approached me to help them with their English pronunciation. My time in ESL has been invaluable for me to develop my skills for teaching pronunciation.

Vocabulary

Languages have always fascinated me. Did you know that the origins of English vocabulary are comprised of 30% Latin roots, 30% Greek roots and 26% Germanic roots, and the remaining 14% is from a variety of other languages around the globe? I find that amazing. Along with my students, I enjoy learning the etymology of vocabulary. When vocabulary is your goal, you must increase your reading. We can add vocabulary-building to your lessons at your request.

I’m a native speaker of English, and I’ve also studied French, German and ASL (American Sign Language). I’ve been passionate about languages my whole life. English was my favorite class in school. It was not surprising I majored in speech communication in college. After a 30-year career as a speech-language pathologist, I began teaching ESL and, after that, specialized in teaching English pronunciation. If SPEAKING ENGLISH is what you’re looking for, I’m the tutor for you. My experience and passion for helping others improve their spoken English is what drives me today with my students.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am a trained speech-language pathologist, and the mother of two grown children, including a son with autism. I was an experienced speech pathologist before I had children. As a young professional I worked in deaf education, and in hospital rehabs with stroke and TBI patients. After having children, I took jobs in schools and private practice. My son was diagnosed on the autism spectrum at age 10. I worked very closely with him on school assignments, and social skills training. I advocated for his IEP (individualized education plan) and his educational supports. I successfully challenged my school district to provide more services for my son. Both my children are now independent adults and I am retired. My professional experience includes working with autistic children of all ages, including teens and young adults. Much of my work has been in schools. I have also worked in a transitional living center for autistic young adults, in San Jose, California, with community activities supporting their work and college classes. I write autism therapy materials, and I admin a social media group of parents of Asperger young adults (high-functioning autism). I know how these kids think, and I know the structure and support they need to be successful. While I mostly tutor accent reduction and ESL, my autism experience is my secret power.
Speech

Speech

In my career I was a speech pathologist, as the communication specialist onsite, I planned and taught thousands of lessons. I taught verbal and written communication to hospital stroke patients needing to relearn how to speak, and to elementary school students needing to learn correct articulation, and speech communication. Since 2011, I’ve taught at ESL and have helped adult internationals learn to speak clear, confident English.
