Current Status: I am tutoring age 12 and up. I am vaccinated and am tutoring students who are vaccinated or who will wear protective masks. Sanitation of hands is required. I have a good space for tutoring (note that there is a cat). I can meet at the Merrimack Public Library. Or, if your entire household is vaccinated, I can meet there.

I specialize in getting stuck problems unstuck. Helping people who didn't get it in class go "AHA!" Giving that extra boost of understanding, clarity, or organizational help so you can be the best student you can be.

I am a previously certified teacher, MEd general special ed, HQT in math through algebra 1, English through HS level. I taught/tutored in public and special ed schools in NH for six years, middle through high school. I am a former technical writer (15 years) and computer programmer (8 years). I'm currently tutoring students privately and through Wyzant, and loving it!

I tutor either home or public schooled students 4th grade and up in math, writing, and general subjects. Also adults who have "never been good at math", or it's rusty, and must pass college math refresher/algebra 1 or a placement test. I have written professionally, and can help you organize and write anything you need to write. I have worked with students with many special needs. I am patient and have a quirky sense of humor; my students are often laughing as they learn. My one requirement of students is that the student, not just the parent, must want tutoring.

I studied Spanish in high school and college, up through third year in high school, took an advanced level class in college, and lived in a Spanish speaking dorm. That was many years ago. More recently, I just completed the first semester of an intermediate Spanish class at Rivier, with the goal of recovering my prior skills. We got through the present, preterite, imperfect, and imperative tenses, at a college level. This is about second to third year at the high school level, as I recall. My Spanish is very useful for a first or second year student, and my accent is good for a non-native speaker. The benefit of me not being a native speaker is I do remember, vividly, where I had trouble when I learned the language, and what was new to me as an American English speaker. I understand how the tenses can be confusing, and am skilled in helping unconfuse it and in finding ways to learn the vocabulary more easily. I can help either with just Spanish, or with another subject (like Math) plus Spanish, working on whichever one needs the most that week.

I had to relearn many of the concepts to become highly qualified, and to teach it and, as I relearned it, I understood why some of them did not make sense the first time through. A lot of math understanding is actually language understanding, so I work to make sure students understand every word that I use or that is on their homework. Algebra 1 uses every piece of math taught prior to that point. When a student lacks fluency in the basics, they often struggle with applying them in Algebra. I'm a practiced detective in finding what underlying piece of math a student needs to relearn. I have often heard my students say, "OHHHH!!!" and then become suddenly more capable, once I work with them to correct a misunderstanding about a basic idea in math. It is a beautiful sound.

Since 2018, I have completed a pre-calc class (Functions), Calculus 1, 2, and 3 and linear algebra at Rivier University, where I got my teaching masters. I love tutoring Algebra! I did NOT love Algebra 2 as a high school student. As a tutor, I excel in finding a way to make the topic make sense to students who do not understand, and I can also help honors students stretch a little bit more as they perfect their skills. My students report that they are finally understanding the material! They especially like the whiteboard drawings of objects (like cells) and processes (like cellular respiration), which have really helped them understand and remember the topics. I'm also able to help with study skills for learning the material, and with the writing needed for biology, including lab reports, and with any math needed to complete lab reports. I will help you follow your teacher's lab guidelines, find online material to help make better drawings and understand material, so you can produce an excellent lab report from your notes and results.

Geometry uses all of your pre-algebra and algebra skills, and adds new facts about lines, angles, and regular shapes in both two and three dimensions. It also includes knowing and applying trigonometric relationships and the Pythagorean Theorum. That's the math part. In addition, there are the proofs. This is the logic part. Students either love or hate proofs; usually there's no middle ground! Proofs require that you be a math lawyer, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the statement made at the start is guilty of being true, or false. It is a picky and precise process, and often frustrating. I can help with all of this, and hopefully make it fun in the process.

I have often heard my students say, "OHHHH!!!" and then become suddenly more capable, once I work with them to correct a misunderstanding about a basic idea in math. It is a beautiful sound. I'm also good at working with the student who has a basic understanding but needs encouragement. My most recent PreCalc student was at honors level and really just needed encouragement and some reteaching of fractions (!), which was a tough area for her (and many students). Factoring skills also are a typical area that needs reteaching.

I have an MEd in Special Ed. I've been a case manager at the High School and Middle School level, taught pullout math for 8th grade special needs students, and have taught math through Algebra 1 at a private special ed school. I've tutored students ranging from grade 4 to grade 9 in both general subjects and specifically math, and have run studies for students up through 12th grade as a case manager, helping students with many subjects.

I really enjoy teaching Algebra 1. I had to relearn many of the concepts to become highly qualified, and to teach it and, as I relearned it, I understood why some of them did not make sense the first time through. A lot of math understanding is actually language understanding, so I work to make sure students understand every word that I use or that is on their homework. Algebra 1 uses every piece of math taught prior to that point. When a student lacks fluency in the basics, they often struggle with applying them in Algebra. I'm a practiced detective in finding what underlying piece of math a student needs to relearn. I have often heard my students say, "OHHHH!!!" and then become suddenly more capable, once I work with them to correct a misunderstanding about a basic idea in math. It is a beautiful sound.

I've been tutoring students in Algebra 2 for several years. I passed the WyzAnt test with 100%. Since 2018, I have completed a pre-calc class (Functions), Calculus 1, 2, and 3 and linear algebra at Rivier University, where I got my teaching masters. I love tutoring Algebra! I did NOT love Algebra 2 as a high school student. As a tutor, I excel in finding a way to make the topic make sense to students who do not understand, and I can also help honors students stretch a little bit more as they perfect their skills. I am delighted to help students understand and (possibly) enjoy doing Algebra 2 work.

I minored in biology in my undergraduate college. I've recently been tutoring high school biology at both standard and honors level, with good success. My students report that they are finally understanding the material! They especially like the whiteboard drawings of objects (like cells) and processes (like cellular respiration), which have really helped them understand and remember the topics. Textbooks on GED preparation are available in public libraries and bookstores. You might already have the book and have taken the test and know where you're at and what you need to improve. That's terrific, because what I'd do to work with a GED student is have you get a study guide and take a practice test before we even started, on your own time, without spending a penny on tutoring. Then either you could look at the results and determine what you want to do, or we could look at the results together and decide which sections you needed help improving. Then we'd work together to improve your skills.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is a combination of a math class and a logic class. Geometry uses all of your pre-algebra and algebra skills, and adds new facts about lines, angles, and regular shapes in both two and three dimensions. It also includes knowing and applying trigonometric relationships and the Pythagorean Theorum. That's the math part. In addition, there are the proofs. This is the logic part. Students either love or hate proofs; usually there's no middle ground! Proofs require that you be a math lawyer, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the statement made at the start is guilty of being true, or false. It is a picky and precise process, and often frustrating. I can help with all of this, and hopefully make it fun in the process.

I studied Spanish in high school and college, up through third year in high school, took an advanced level class in college, and lived in a Spanish speaking dorm. That was many years ago. More recently, I just completed the first semester of an intermediate Spanish class at Rivier, with the goal of recovering my prior skills. We got through the present, preterite, imperfect, and imperative tenses, at a college level. This is about second to third year at the high school level, as I recall. My Spanish is very useful for a first or second year student, and my accent is good for a non-native speaker. The benefit of me not being a native speaker is I do remember, vividly, where I had trouble when I learned the language, and what was new to me as an American English speaker. I understand how the tenses can be confusing, and am skilled in helping unconfuse it and in finding ways to learn the vocabulary more easily. I can help either with just Spanish, or with another subject (like Math) plus Spanish, working on whichever one needs the most that week.

Along with my undergraduate degree in English and my graduate degree in education (including classes on teaching language arts), I worked for many years as a technical writer in the computer industry, honing my skills at writing. I'm very good at organizing materials, and have written everything from paragraphs to poetry to technical books. I've worked with students in the elementary, middle school, and high school grades, helping them with writing assignments. Whether it's a poem you need to write for a class, or a research paper, or a short story you need to read and understand ... I can give you a hand with it. If you're in high school, college, or after and need help with papers or research -- I was a 4.0 student through grad school; I researched and wrote a LOT of papers. I'm very confident that if you have a paper you need help on, we can work on it together so that you will do well. In addition, I've studied how to teach penmanship and taught it from A to Z to two students, one who had undecipherable writing. I can help with that also!

Test Preparation

ASVAB,

ASVAB

I am available to tutor the academic portions of the ASVAB test, as I'm a certified teacher and very qualified in both the English and Math topics that are on the test. These portions are what is used for your AFQT (the qualifying test). I am also excellent at problems requiring pattern recognition and matching, and thus can help with the section on assembling objects. In addition, I can help you with test-taking skills. I am not a qualified expert in the vocational portions (electrical, car mechanics, or mechanical). However, I managed to pass the questions they asked me... and I can help you understand the questions and how they are asked, given a practice test on those portions of the ASVAB. The vocational portions are used to help place you in the appropriate training program within the armed forces; you need to bring your own skills to this portion of the test anyhow.

I am familiar with the materials that are on the SSAT test. I've helped one student prepare for the test, using a preparation booklet. As well, I've explained test taking specifically for the SSAT, and helped students prepare for taking tests. If you need some quizzing and review, and reteaching on any area we find you're weak in, we can do that together. I can also help you understand the information on when you should guess on a question, and when you should not guess, and why.
