Are you (or is your child) "math phobic"? Are you lost in math class, or stuck at the first sentence of a paper you have to write for Monday? Do you want to do better in school? Are you taking an honors class and want to excel? Do you have to pass college math or a qualifying test? Do you need someone to help with all subjects? with writing papers?

I'll help...and we'll have fun doing it.

I specialize in getting stuck problems unstuck. Helping people who didn't get it in class go "AHA!" Giving that extra boost of understanding, clarity, or organizational help so you can be the best student you can be.

I am a previously certified teacher, MEd general special ed, HQT in math through algebra 1, English through HS level. I taught/tutored in public and special ed schools in NH for six years, middle through high school. I am a former technical writer (15 years) and computer programmer (8 years). I'm currently tutoring students privately and through Wyzant, and loving it!

I tutor either home or public schooled students 4th grade and up in math, writing, and general subjects. Also adults who have "never been good at math", or it's rusty, and must pass college math refresher/algebra 1 or a placement test. I have written professionally, and can help you organize and write anything you need to write. I have worked with students with many special needs. I am patient and have a quirky sense of humor; my students are often laughing as they learn. My one requirement of students is that the student, not just the parent, must want tutoring.

Grammar,

Grammar

English grammar rules are often a difficult topic for students. I can help you look at sentence diagrams and understand what's going on and what the rules are. I have resources to use in our sessions and to recommend. Since I worked as a technical writer for years, I'm excellent at helping you proofread your work and at explaining why the corrections need to be made, so you can get it right the next time.
Proofreading,

Proofreading

I've done quite a lot of my own proofreading, as a professional technical writer. I'm not sure whether this entry is to DO proofreading for people or to help students learn how to do proofreading! If it's teaching proofreading to students, I'd do that in the context of general language arts help. If what you need is someone to proofread a paper, or papers, or a longer work, contact me and we'll see how I can help.
Spanish

Spanish

I studied Spanish in high school and college, up through third year in high school, took an advanced level class in college, and lived in a Spanish speaking dorm. That was many years ago. More recently, I just completed the first semester of an intermediate Spanish class at Rivier, with the goal of recovering my prior skills. We got through the present, preterite, imperfect, and imperative tenses, at a college level. This is about second to third year at the high school level, as I recall. My Spanish is very useful for a first or second year student, and my accent is good for a non-native speaker. The benefit of me not being a native speaker is I do remember, vividly, where I had trouble when I learned the language, and what was new to me as an American English speaker. I understand how the tenses can be confusing, and am skilled in helping unconfuse it and in finding ways to learn the vocabulary more easily. I can help either with just Spanish, or with another subject (like Math) plus Spanish, working on whichever one needs the most that week.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is best learned while learning material that uses the vocabulary. And, material is best learned when every word in the material is understood. When I work with students in any subject area, we go over the words used in the material. I don't just give definitions. I work with students to understand the words. For example, when I work with a student on the topic of fractions, decimals, and percentages, and converting between them, we discuss what the words "fraction", "decimal", and "percent" mean. We look them up, and examine where the words come from. We compare them to words the student might know, for example, that if you "fracture" a bone you have broken it, a "fragment" is a piece of something, and the word "fraction" comes from the same Latin word. If a student understands the words of a subject, they are much more likely to understand the subject. Vocabulary is critical to understanding.

English

English,

English

I have been certified as HQT in English since it was my undergraduate major. I wrote, as a career, for many years. I've studied reading and literature. I've worked with students in the elementary, middle school, and high school grades, helping them with understanding texts and with writing. Whether it's a poem you need to write for a class, or a research paper, or a short story you need to read and understand... I can give you a hand with it.

Literature,

Literature

I was an English major in my undergraduate years. I love to read, and have read many stories and books in class, and analyzed them. I've also been a special educator in English classrooms from 8th grade level through high school. I can help students in lower grades also. I won't claim to have read everything, but I've read enough of everything to be able to help you understand your assignments. I've written enough papers to help you decide on a topic and find evidence in a piece of literature, or to discuss what you might compare between two pieces. If you let me know beforehand, I might even be able to read the entire text before we meet. Just give me a bit longer if it's a novel or harder to find.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I really enjoy teaching Algebra 1. I had to relearn many of the concepts to become highly qualified, and to teach it and, as I relearned it, I understood why some of them did not make sense the first time through. A lot of math understanding is actually language understanding, so I work to make sure students understand every word that I use or that is on their homework. Algebra 1 uses every piece of math taught prior to that point. When a student lacks fluency in the basics, they often struggle with applying them in Algebra. I'm a practiced detective in finding what underlying piece of math a student needs to relearn. I have often heard my students say, "OHHHH!!!" and then become suddenly more capable, once I work with them to correct a misunderstanding about a basic idea in math. It is a beautiful sound.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I've been tutoring students in Algebra 2 for several years. I passed the WyzAnt test with 100%. Since 2018, I have completed a pre-calc class (Functions), Calculus 1, 2, and 3 and linear algebra at Rivier University, where I got my teaching masters. I love tutoring Algebra! I did NOT love Algebra 2 as a high school student. As a tutor, I excel in finding a way to make the topic make sense to students who do not understand, and I can also help honors students stretch a little bit more as they perfect their skills. I am delighted to help students understand and (possibly) enjoy doing Algebra 2 work.
Biology,

Biology

I minored in biology in my undergraduate college. I've recently been tutoring high school biology at both standard and honors level, with good success. My students report that they are finally understanding the material! They especially like the whiteboard drawings of objects (like cells) and processes (like cellular respiration), which have really helped them understand and remember the topics. I'm also able to help with study skills for learning the material, and with the writing needed for biology, including lab reports, and with any math needed to complete lab reports. I will help you follow your teacher's lab guidelines, find online material to help make better drawings and understand material, so you can produce an excellent lab report from your notes and results.

Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is a combination of a math class and a logic class. Geometry uses all of your pre-algebra and algebra skills, and adds new facts about lines, angles, and regular shapes in both two and three dimensions. It also includes knowing and applying trigonometric relationships and the Pythagorean Theorum. That's the math part. In addition, there are the proofs. This is the logic part. Students either love or hate proofs; usually there's no middle ground! Proofs require that you be a math lawyer, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the statement made at the start is guilty of being true, or false. It is a picky and precise process, and often frustrating. I can help with all of this, and hopefully make it fun in the process.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Students need a firm foundation in all the concepts of pre-algebra if they are going to do well in Algebra. I'm skilled in working with students to make sure they understand all the elementary basics that are used in pre-algebra, and have a firm understanding of the beginning algebra concepts so they can go on to succeed. I'm a practiced detective in finding what underlying piece of math a student needs to relearn. I have often heard my students say, "OHHHH!!!" and then become suddenly more capable, once I work with them to correct a misunderstanding about a basic idea in math. It is a beautiful sound. A lot of math is actually language, so I work to make sure students understand every word that I use or that is on their homework. I believe math should be fun, and students learn better when they are laughing. I also have many different math manipulatives and other physical representations and know how to use them to make ideas more concrete.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I've been tutoring math for years, and have recently added PreCalculus to my subjects. I've been re-taking all my higher level math at the college level; I completed Calculus 3 in Spring 2019 and I have successfully tutored two private students through PreCalculus. I'm very good at working with students to find where they are stuck and reteaching that specific part of the topic. I'm also good at working with the student who has a basic understanding but needs encouragement. My most recent PreCalc student was at honors level and really just needed encouragement and some reteaching of fractions (!), which was a tough area for her (and many students). Factoring skills also are a typical area that needs reteaching.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I’ve tutored math from elementary through pre-calculus for many years. I’ve also tutored SSAT, ASVAB, PSAT, and other tests. The tests require that you not only know the math, but can combine skills from different sections of your math classes. Sometimes you need to work back from the answers. Sometimes you must re- format your answer to fit the way the test presents the answer. They can be tricky in how they word both questions and answers. I approach SAT tutoring not just as a math test but also as an understanding of the test itself.

GED,

GED

The GED covers many topics. I'm proficient in several topics; please see individual topics for information on my skills in each. Textbooks on GED preparation are available in public libraries and bookstores. You might already have the book and have taken the test and know where you're at and what you need to improve. That's terrific, because what I'd do to work with a GED student is have you get a study guide and take a practice test before we even started, on your own time, without spending a penny on tutoring. Then either you could look at the results and determine what you want to do, or we could look at the results together and decide which sections you needed help improving. Then we'd work together to improve your skills.
Geometry,

SAT Math,

Spanish,

Writing

Writing

Along with my undergraduate degree in English and my graduate degree in education (including classes on teaching language arts), I worked for many years as a technical writer in the computer industry, honing my skills at writing. I'm very good at organizing materials, and have written everything from paragraphs to poetry to technical books. I've worked with students in the elementary, middle school, and high school grades, helping them with writing assignments. Whether it's a poem you need to write for a class, or a research paper, or a short story you need to read and understand ... I can give you a hand with it. If you're in high school, college, or after and need help with papers or research -- I was a 4.0 student through grad school; I researched and wrote a LOT of papers. I'm very confident that if you have a paper you need help on, we can work on it together so that you will do well. In addition, I've studied how to teach penmanship and taught it from A to Z to two students, one who had undecipherable writing. I can help with that also!

Test Preparation

ASVAB,

ASVAB

I am available to tutor the academic portions of the ASVAB test, as I'm a certified teacher and very qualified in both the English and Math topics that are on the test. These portions are what is used for your AFQT (the qualifying test). I am also excellent at problems requiring pattern recognition and matching, and thus can help with the section on assembling objects. In addition, I can help you with test-taking skills. I am not a qualified expert in the vocational portions (electrical, car mechanics, or mechanical). However, I managed to pass the questions they asked me... and I can help you understand the questions and how they are asked, given a practice test on those portions of the ASVAB. The vocational portions are used to help place you in the appropriate training program within the armed forces; you need to bring your own skills to this portion of the test anyhow.

SSAT

SSAT

I am familiar with the materials that are on the SSAT test. I've helped one student prepare for the test, using a preparation booklet. As well, I've explained test taking specifically for the SSAT, and helped students prepare for taking tests. If you need some quizzing and review, and reteaching on any area we find you're weak in, we can do that together. I can also help you understand the information on when you should guess on a question, and when you should not guess, and why.

Has made a difference

Student had consistently struggled with Math ranging from D's to B's in private and public grades 1-8. We saw a steady increase in grades once Louise started her tutoring. I am pleased that the student as a Freshman in a private college prep High School is now confident and has secured two A's. When approached by teacher to move to Honors, the student simply stated, "Not right now, I want to feel what it is like to finally get an A in Math." Thank you!

Tutor responded:

This made my day! I'm very happy to hear of your daughter's success. Best wishes for the year, to all your family.

great tutor!

Louise was a great tutor for my daughter this summer. She helped her with many aspects of the ASVAB test while making her math skills stronger at the same time. Her patience and ability to explain all things math has helped my daughter to feel confident to take the ASVAB! Louise is very knowledgeable with all types of math and I would highly recommend her to others in the future.

Knowledgeable, resourceful and patient tutor

Louise is very easy to talk to and a very good communicator. She has helped me a lot in building my confidence while taking tests in class. She has taught me how to find the little mistakes I make and how to correct them. Since Louise became my tutor, my test scores and overall grade has improved in algebra. She has a ton of lessons and worksheets that she gives me to do in my spare time and that helps me a lot.

All star math tutor and mentor

Louise has been teaching my daughter for several years. She is a wonderful teacher and my daughter has excelled and maintained an A average under her tutelage. She is able to keep my daughter engaged and eager to learn. I highly recommend her and can not begin to thank her for all her support and flexibility when we have needed extra help.

Very Helpful

We had difficulty finding tutors that would actually go to people's homes. Usually a library, or school only. Over and above that, Louise is wonderful with Sam. Very patient, and personable. Also, no smoke and mirror show. She is right up front with what her capabilities are.

Helped a Great Deal

Louise started explaining to our son the route of Spanish and other languages and why it can be so tricky. She stripped a few words down to get him to start from the beginning so he wouldn't feel so intimidated by the language. This helped him a great deal!
