Hi! I'm an applied mathematics PhD working in a highly interdisciplinary research area, and I hold my BS and MS in a combination of pure mathematics and statistics. I have about 8 years of experience teaching and tutoring mathematics at a wide range of levels, ranging from elementary school mathematics through senior-year university engineering and mathematics coursework, and even some graduate coursework. I've also helped with exam prep for the SAT, ACT, and AP Calculus AB and BC.

I love mathematics and its applications, and I want to share the joy and beauty of math with you, no matter what level you're working at. My approach is all about reducing complex problems down to a handful of fundamental principles, building comfort with these principles, and internalizing theory so that intuition guides problem-solving. Problem-solving can be a lot of fun, which isn't always obvious in a classroom or lecture environment, and I think this is where one-on-one or small-group private tutoring really shines!

I have extensive experience tutoring calculus, differential equations and linear algebra in various styles, including AP calculus and high school differential equations. With sufficient notice to prepare, I can also tutor real analysis, various applied mathematics courses, probability and statistics, dynamical systems, Fourier analysis, partial differential equations, numerical analysis and methods courses, advanced linear algebra and much more. I'm also constantly expanding my areas of expertise and interest, and if there's something in the vein of pure or applied mathematics or physics that you'd like to work on together, I may have time to collaborate and co-read with you; this could be advanced coursework towards your degree, maybe just a personal curiosity you have, or something else entirely.

Whatever you're looking for, we can figure it out together! Please feel free to reach out for a quote, consultation, or just a quick chat. It would be great to hear from you! :)

Computer

Mathematica,

Mathematica

I have used Mathematica to solve research-level problems in mathematics applied to nanoscale technology, and I am familiar with Mathematica's symbolic computation tools, built-in differential equations solvers, matrix equation solvers, and various methods and packages built into the software.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I have TA'd three sections of Introduction to Scientific Computing which heavily relied on Matlab for the implementation of various numerical algorithms, including root-finders and polynomial interpolation. In my dissertation research, I have set up and implemented novel finite difference methods for the solution of strongly nonlinear partial differential equations modeling thin film evolution under ion-beam irradiation. I have roughly five years of experience with Matlab, dating back to my undergrad where I focused on differential equations.

Math

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I have taken and audited various courses in discrete and finite mathematics, including set theory, graph theory, game theory, combinatorics, enumeration, and financial mathematics. I have also taught coursework related to set theory and discrete mathematics as instructor of record.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I have taken and audited courses in set theory, finite and discrete mathematics, and have had exposure to combinatorics and enumeration. I have also worked on graph theory, game theory, and other areas frequently considered "finite mathematics". Outside of things usually thought of as finite mathematics, I have also worked on finite difference methods and finite element methods for solving differential equations.

Seasoned Teacher!

He is patient, teaches well, and very knowledgeble with calculus content. Amazing what has been accomplished in the sessions within a short period of time! Flexible hours.

Great Tutor!

My son is a university student who is taking a Linear Algebra course, which he finds challenging. He said that John's explanations were very clear and made a big difference in his understanding of the material. We will definitely be booking more sessions with John!

a good start

I think today went great, it’s obvious my algebra, trig, calc 1 foundation is lacking. Still I think this week I want to focus on what will be on my test friday. Maybe tomorrow we can review my first exam, which I will post, and then we can go into my current material. Anyway, thanks again. Looking forward to our next session tomorrow.

Able to explain graduate-level math on an undergraduate level

First lesson with Tyler dealt with power series, Taylor series and boundary layer problems. He knows the material well enough that he doesn't have to think about the math and instead can think about how to explain it.
