Bio

I am a highly dedicated language teacher with a Master's Degree in French, TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and FLE (Français langue étrangère) certificates.

I have been teaching English as a second language since 1999 when I joined the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Program to teach in Japanese junior high schools as an AET (Assistant English Teacher). Since my return in 2000, I have continued to teach English both in private lessons and in institutions.

I have taught English as a second language for teenage and adult international students that come to the USA to enter an American University to continue their studies. I have taught all levels of English from very beginner to upper advanced / Master's level English, with a specialty in advanced grammar and academic writing. I have also taught test preparation for such English proficiency and college entrance exams as TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC and GRE and have also proctored some of these tests.

I have taught French at the Alliance Francaise, courses for both beginner's and intermediate students. I have also taught French at the high school level and in private lessons. My French is near-native, as I began learning French at the age of 14. I continue to maintain my proficiency by frequently traveling overseas to French-speaking countries and by reading. Not only is traveling important to me on the aspect of language, but it is equally important for me to educate my students on all aspects of French culture and customs. I am passionate about the French language and love France and visiting Francophone countries like Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg.

I love using real articles from magazines and internet as well as literature, short stories etc, for teaching purposes. I want to make language learning interesting and fun. Having a discussion on what we read is a very important part of my lessons as I can check comprehension and vocabulary as well as elicit opinions and new ideas, which many language tests require for high scores.

Public Speaking

I have taught speech classes at ESL Language Centers for ESL students, and a private speech class in Japan. I was also a tour guide so I know a lot about speaking in front of large groups, making what I say exciting and interesting and sometimes funny, and also about speaking loud enough for everyone to hear me.

At a previous job, ELS Language Centers, I was often in charge of giving a speech class. There I taught students different kinds of speeches and techniques including emphasis, gestures, intonation, stress, and other techniques including having them memorize a movie speech that they had to practice and deliver. At my last job, I had a private student with whom I also worked on refining and developing speech skills.

BEST TUTOR!

Stephanie helped me to prepare myself for the Columbia University essay test (ALP). English is my second language, and she knew exactly how to explain my mistake so I can actually work to improve them. She is very dedicated to her work. She provides a lot of materials and checks every essay I wrote in her free time. I recommend her, especially for ESL people.

She is a lively and knowledgeable tutor.

Stephanie D. is an animated tutor. Her expressive teaching style helped me learn not only what to speak in English but also how to keep the audience engaged in a world of short attention spans. After her lesson, you will feel as if you’ve had a lively sightseeing tour. I did, and I’m looking forward to joining her next session. yuko

Amazing tutor!

Stephanie is so patient and thorough. She’s the most knowledgeable, but makes it very easy to learn and enjoy the language. She has the greatest way about her and feels familiar once you meet her!

If you're looking for a knowledgeable, personable tutor, Stephanie is the right choice.

I'd long wanted to engage a tutor to help me become proficient in French. But I was very shy! Stephanie set me at ease. She is also interesting, fun, and creates a rewarding atmosphere in which to learn. She is informed and intelligent besides.
