My name is James. I always have had a passion for learning and teaching. During college I studied Philosophy and graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Philosophy. I also have an interest in foreign languages and learned how to read and speak Mandarin Chinese fluently and earned an Associate's degree in Chinese while doing so. I have traveled to Taiwan and have spent much time in foreign countries. Learning other cultures is a passion of mine and encouraging others through tutoring English only emboldens that passion. Over the years after college I spent a great deal of time tutoring other people and getting them to understand various parts of the topic we were studying. Everyone learns through different ways and part of being a good tutor is finding out what way works best for different people. I work with students to develop a lesson plan that engages them and keeps them interested in the topic at hand by establishing exactly what their needs are during our first interaction.

I have always done my best to help others around me learn and understand. I have spent a year tutoring students in test-taking skills for a variety of different tests from multiple-choice strategies to essay reviewing. By working with students that had trouble with memorization I was able to help them overcome their weaknesses and successfully pass seemingly insurmountable tests. I have tutored students as young as 5 as well as teenagers and adults. Most of my tutoring experience is with adults but I have worked with children in the past for a few years. I have helped young students with language skills and some mathematics. One on one and small groups are the types of tutoring that I am most experienced with. I specialize in tutoring Mandarin Chinese, History, Philosophy, English, and some mathematics. I am well-versed in American history and general world history with a focus on East Asia.
