I have had a variety of positions in education,including classroom teaching and administration. My greatest satisfaction has been working with students. I enjoy helping students,at all levels of achievement, to improve. I have worked with students of all ages, including adults. I have worked with AP students, as well as students who feel they are struggling with standardized tests. My approach focuses on encouraging students to think clearly and logically, and then to develop the writing tools to express ideas persuasively. Grammar can be boring, but it can be learned and it will help the writer to express ideas with clarity and purpose. Vocabulary development is key to reading with comprehension and writing with expression. I have taught in large public high schools, private schools and alternative shcool settings. I have advanced degrees in English and education from Univ.of Penna. and Harvard.

The ACT reading section requires an understanding of grammar and other writing skills. The questions test comprehension of the passages, but they also focus on problems in expression that are related to poor sentence structure, weak word choice, wrong punctuation. The reading section also requires students to develop a technique for moving back and forth between the passage and the questions. Many students lose their place then don't have enough time to complete the test. Students can practice this kind of testing arrangement and learn tips for moving forward through the test with the least number of errors.
SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

Scoring well on the SAT writing and reading sections requires the student to have a command of a certain level of vocabulary, to understand the grammar rules of formal writing, and to be able to read passages, on many different topics, that require the ability to analyze the author's purpose, point of view, and literary style and conventions. The student also must be able to understand the implications of these passages for their larger meaning, to think logically and to draw conclusions from the arguments and positions that are presented in these works. The essay questions are difficult; the student is expected to write a response that is well organized, logical, and coherent. The student's ability to support an argument with examples, reasons and explanations is also assessed.

Esther is a great tutor for high school and college level students. My son is very impressed with her ability to assimilate important concepts and ideals that helps students improve their clarity in writing. He is currently in an honor program and receiving an “A” in English class. Esther emphasizes that younger students’ common misconceptions in writing is that complicated and complex style of writing would improve their content.
