Hello!

My name is Cass, and my top priority is to help my students achieve their goals. Whenever students are learning something new, I like to break the topic down into its simplest form, then build up in complexity as we go.

I've tutored students of all ages for about ten years, and I've been in the classroom teaching for six. My students have ranged in age from elementary to high school to adult learners. I've had a broad range of experiences, including working abroad in Spain and Paraguay, and I'm fluent in Spanish.

Currently, I teach English language and literature at the high school level. My driving principle is that teachers should meet students at the level where they are, and then build up from there. I also think that learning should be an active process, with lots of 'doing' by students to practice, and that learning should be engaging and fun.

ESL/ESOL

I have experience teaching and tutoring students of all ages in an ESL and ESOL capacity. First, I taught ESL classes for four years abroad, first with elementary/middle school students and later with high school students. Concurrently, I also tutored adult learners. Secondly, I'm TEFL-certified (2021), and I currently teach high school English Language, Literature, and ESL classes. One of my primary goals when teaching or tutoring is to break down whatever we're learning into small, digestible, and easy-to-understand pieces. I'm also fluent in Spanish, and I'm very experienced helping Spanish speakers of all levels improve their English levels.

Spanish

As of 2024, I am C1-certified via the DELE exam, and after living in Spanish-speaking countries for over four years, I have a broad and thorough knowledge of different regional varieties of Spanish, grammar, vocabulary, and cultural practices. I also have over six years of experience teaching various subjects. I taught myself Spanish using a combination of total-immersion, essential grammatical structures, and the essential little words necessary for every sentence (the same words that often get ignored or skipped over in formal classroom settings). My goal in every tutoring session is to break down the language into its component parts so it's incredibly understandable, then build back up the complexity. I took Spanish in high school and college and struggled both times. I didn't connect to the way it was taught -- it seemed dry, uninteresting, and convoluted. Worst of all, I was expected to somehow magically know all these little words that no one ever talked about, but that were essential to make sentences. Please submit at least 3–4 complete sentences about why you are qualified to tutor in this specific subject. You can include educational background, experience tutoring or teaching, and tutoring methods, as it relates to this specific subject. You will be notified by email when your request has been accepted, or if we need more information from you. If your qualifications are accepted, they will be displayed on your public profile.

As a high school English teacher, we work on ACT reading and language skills throughout the year, with more intensive practice in the spring. I also hold an English Creative Writing degree, which included extensive coursework in planning, writing, and revising. Finally, when I was a high school student myself, I scored in the 95th percentile on the English ACT.
