M.S. in Education: Specializing in Math/ English/ SAT/ ACT/ ISEE

I have been teaching and tutoring for ten years. I have a M.S. in education. One of my specialties is working with the following learning disabilities: ADD/ADHD, Asperger's/high functioning autism, dyslexia. I tutor regular students in all levels of math and English. I also tutor all three sections of the SAT and ACT. My method is a combination of positive reinforcement and skills practice. I will assess the student's present level of performance. I will then help to develop a learning plan...

dyslexia

autism

I have a M.S. in Special Education. I specialize in working with students on the Autism Spectrum. I can teach them new lessons or just review ones that they have learned in school. I realize that autism involves deficits in socialization, communication and inflexible behaviors. There are also occasionally intellectual delays that occur. I try to tutor with a positive attitude. I am always kind to my students. I will try to strengthen the areas that they are weak with guided practice and instruction.

Aspergers

I have a M.S. in Special Education. I specialize in working with kids on the Autism Spectrum. Children that are higher functioning on the Autism spectrum will have issues with socialization and communication. Quite often children with Asperger's are very bright. They are able to think critically. I encourage a great deal of practice on homework and the material that they are studying in class. I balance this academic work with helping them build social and communication skills. I believe in being positive but firm.

ADD/ADHD

ADD and ADHD are learning disabilities that affect a child's ability to focus long enough to retain any information. The ADHD has an added component of hyperactivity and usually occurs in boys. I have a M.S. in Special Education. I have worked with a number of students with attention difficulties. I find it is best to break the material into small pieces. I try to simplify the language so the concepts are easier to comprehend. Manipulatives and diagrams help to hold the child's attention. Overall, I try to access all three modalities: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Hopefully, the student can make connections through a combination of these methods.

Evan really got to know Noah and had some good advice for him. However I feel that for our purposes, Evan and Noah together did not make good use of time. Perhaps with a more content-specific approach, the tutoring connection between Evan and Noah can work out again some time in the future.
