Rachel

ESL & French Tutor

I am an experienced French tutor. I graduated from Loyola University Chicago in May 2016 with a B.A. in French. I have taken French for 12 years (or ever since third grade in elementary school). I have read many novels in French, including En Attendant Godot, L'étranger, Germinal and Le Fantôme de l'Opéra. I have studied a wide variety of French poets and have read their works in French. I have taught French full-time and also helped with test prep before mid-terms and finals. I have tutored ...

dyslexia

I have an extensive background in teaching students with unique learning capabilities. Part of my work experience includes working with languages and teaching students with dyslexia. Dyslexia at its best is a constant annoyance, but at its worst it can interfere with learning to a distraction. My experience with teaching students with dyslexia requires much patience and listening skills. Dyslexia is incurable, but luckily I have discovered ways of helping others overcome some of its unhappy side effects.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with students with ADD in a special education class as an assistant teacher and as a camp counselor. I am knowledgeable of their needs, limitations, and capabilities.

Aspergers

I have work experience at New Trier Township High School in Winnetka, Illinois as an assistant teacher to students with learning disabilities. I was highly recommended for this position as a result of my previous work there as an assistant teacher. I helped students with basic coursework, as well as escorting them to museums and other excursions throughout the semester. In addition to working with a special education class, I have specific job training as a camp counselor in understanding the signs of aspergers and other learning disabilities.

autism

I have extensive work experience with autistic students, as well as with other students with special needs. As an assistant teacher at New Trier High School, I helped out in an ELS and Special Education class in which I helped students with unique learning capabilities. I was also a camp counselor in two different camps for campers with special needs, one at New Trier and one at the North Shore Special Education District and Recreation Association (NSSED/NSSRA). Campers' ages ranged from 3 to 21 years old. I have a wide knowledge of the challenges that face special needs children and how to help them overcome obstacles. Autism was one of the most common disabilities among the campers, and I was assigned to two students with autism whom I escorted on excursions to the park, zoo, museums, and pool.

spelling

I have experience teaching English usage to students, and this obviously includes spelling. I have tutored both grade school and high school students in spelling, and I encourage students to look up words in the dictionary if they are unsure. I also am able to suggest definition clues based on the word's origins and roots. For example, the English word "respiration" contains the Latin root "spire," meaning "to breathe."

anatomy

Anatomy is really interesting to me. It is really rewarding to find out how one's body works through science. I took this subject as part of a biology class in high school and still retain a lot of the knowledge and interest gained.

psychology

I took two psychology classes in high school, and I retain most of the introductory knowledge of conditioning, areas of the brain, and famous experiments such as the infamous Milgram experiment. One of the most important things to learn about these experiments is what constitutes an ethical (as opposed to unethical) experiment.

geometry

I took geometry as a summer school class in high school. Because it was a comprehensive class but with less weeks to learn than in the school year, I came home every day with five to eight hours of homework each night. It was extremely trying, but I worked hard and eventually earned an "A" in the class. Geometry takes patience, and luckily that it is something I have always had.

biology

Biology was one of my favorite classes in high school. It never lost my interest as a study and I almost majored in this in college. I would be more than happy to help any students with their high school or grade school biology homework.

I had her as my tutor for improving my English listening and reading skills. I am not a beginner by any means. Rachel was phenomenal helping me improve my reading and comprehension. She used to have books and article for me to read and then we both read the same article or passage loud and analyze it. She was innovative in her methodology and trying new ways by preparing lesson plans and exercises. I enjoyed studying with her.

Anna C. from Evanston, IL

Rachel is the best tutor I have ever met. She is very patient, responsible, and knowledgeable. During the class, she is really patient. You won't feel uncomfortable at all even if you have a lot of problems because she can explain everything to you clearly until you understand. After class, she is really responsible. She can reply your questions in detail very fast (no more than two hours). Also, she is very knowledgeable. She not only can help you with your grammar and writing but also your resume, paper and presentation. All in all, she is the best tutor I have ever met. Don’t hesitate! Begin your first course with Rachel!

Laura B. from Evanston, IL

I have known Rachel for one and a half years, during which time she taught me English as a second language. Rachel is always preparing our classes with new topics and trying to help me in the grammatical points where I am weaker. We work not only in grammar, but also practice listening and pronunciation in every class. This process is a comprehensive way for me to learn. She is very well-organized and flexible with the time we meet, which I appreciate because sometimes I have to change our meeting time for my job. I consider Rachel to be a personable, patient and mature person with a very high interest in teaching. I highly recommend her as an English teacher.

Rachel knows what she is teaching. I learned so much from her. She teaches other subjects than just English as well, like biology, history, and philosophy. My grades improved a lot thanks to her help. Mostly, she helped me with my English in writing papers for classes. I learned how to write better papers and prepare for the SAT essay writing. Highly recommended tutor. Her hours are flexible and convenient to my schedule. She is really nice. It was nice to work with her and I will continue to have lessons with her.

Wei X. from Evanston, IL

Rachel has been teaching my girlfriend for 7 weeks. The initial goal is to improve my girlfriend's spoken English and daily conversation. Moreover, Rachel brought many materials of idioms she prepared for every class in order to help her better understanding the language and plus the culture. My girlfriend is used to be too shy to speak and afraid of making mistakes. However, after few classes, she becomes the one who initiated the conversation, try to speak as much as possible and more willing to share her learning experience with me. That is a huge turning point for her. I am so excited and proud of her great improvement .The whole learning process is a lot of fun and the result is apparently outstanding. Great job! Keep going!

Lynn S. from Evanston, IL

Rachel must be a very gifted tutor because before I started working with her, I knew next to nothing about my computer's operating system, Word or Excel. However, after a few lessons, I have been able to use my Mac incredibly well. I think the thing that surprises me most is that Rachel shows me how to do things in a way that enables me to retain the information. In addition to being a great instructor, Rachel is very considerate and personable. I certainly recommend her services as a tutor.

Paweena C. from Brookline, MA

My sister took English classes with Rachel while she was visiting the US from Thailand. Nowadays, she keeps practicing English by herself. Rachel was very patient to teach and support my sister during her stay in Chicago. Thank you so much for everything.
