Caitlin

Versatile, patient multi-subject tutor

My name is Caitlin K. and I am a senior at George Fox University in Newberg, OR. I'm majoring in Mechanical Engineering and work hard to attain excellence in whatever I do. In high school, I was ranked 3rd in my class with a 3.99 GPA. Since I am still in school, I know well what students are going through. I know the panic of realizing an upcoming test is going to be harder than expected and I know the frustration of trying to do the math homework and not having any clue as to what the next ...

I was looking for a tutor to help my daughter review some algebra concepts before beginning high school this past fall. My daughter (as is typical of many teenage girls) was feeling a bit stressed about the course material and also concerned with her image. She was apprehensive about appearing weaker by admitting that she needed some extra help. In searching for a tutor, I specifically wanted a younger female who could not only help with the material but also act as a role model for my daughter. I have to say that anyone who might be put off by this tutor's relative youth need not worry. Despite being a (college) student now, Caitlin K. is one of the most poised, professional young women I have encountered. She arrived at each lesson very well prepared and always offered immediate feedback to both my daughter and myself. Being a student herself made her able to empathize with my daughter and in my opinion gave her an extra edge in finding strategies to help clarify some sticky concepts. As a result of their sessions, my daughter was able to start high school with her confidence intact.

Caitlin was very kind and patient with our son. She encouraged him to write and present with more confidence by connecting with him and giving him methods to work through his stumbling blocks. He was very comfortable with her and feels like he's gained skills that will help him in the future. We would definitely work with her again!

Caitlin was a delight for my daughter (age 16) to work with all summer. My daughter has had 4 tutors at different times in the past, although it had been a few years since needing one. She never had such a good experience as with Caitlin. She felt accepted, and like Caitlin was patient and helpful, and connecting with her at a personal level, yet delivering the important information my daughter needed to learn. I was very relieved when my daughter said "I want to keep going all summer". Halleluia!

It has been a real pleasure to work with Caitlin! For an adult re-learner such as myself, the primary requirement of a tutor is to provide incentive and inspiration and generally make the learning process enjoyable so as to ensure that the student does not become distracted by other interests or concerns. This she has done, in large part because of her ability to discern what kind of learning situation works best for me and to tailor the learning approach to best meet my own needs. One special consideration with an adult re-learner such as myself is to make sure the individual feels comfortable working in a situation where the student might possibly be experiencing feelings of frustration at having to step backwards and go over material which he or she had once mastered. This might especially be the case with a tutor who is considerably younger. Caitlin was always sensitive to this and was able to make me feel very much at ease working with her and with the material. I can think of no higher praise for Caitlin than to say that she has helped me to re-experience that same joy and wonder which I felt upon first learning some of the things which I am now reviewing. Her ability to adapt the tutoring process to the individual needs of the student would work well with any type of learner, whether an adult re-learner or a school student.

Caitlin was a huge help to the girls with just their one session. They are planning on meeting with her again next week. Caitlin - thank you!
