ADD/ADHD

I am currently working with a number of students with ADD/ADHD and have worked with quite a few students with this learning challenge in the classroom. I assess the strengths and areas of improvement for each student and prescribe work on their skill level. I also limit the amount of time needed for each assignment by decreasing the total number of problems, utilizing breaks from the work, varying assignments, and minimizing distractions. I also assess the student's best modality of learning and then prescribe work based on that assessment. I maintain a patient and reinforcing teaching style, focus on success and reinforcement, and the positive. I also combine much academic work with concrete projects to avoid over attention on abstracts. I also stress listening skills such as looking at the speaker, paying attention to body language, giving feedback, and oral reviewing. In addition, I provide a study skills unit that breaks the academic work into basic parts that can be studied one skill at a team, using a parts to whole approach. A key part of my work deals with building confidence, self-esteem, and utilizing the interests of the student while always giving constant and immediate reinforcement. Where necessary, I also utilize special texts and worksheets. In many cases I will break the learning to the most basic elements or at a concrete level and utilize a parts to whole approach. I find that confidence and success are key elements in a distraction free environment with modified assignments in difficulty and quality.

My son just had his first lesson with Joe. When I asked him a bit afterward if he thought Joe would be able to help him improve his writing, he replied with a huge "YES!" and a smile that I don't often see as big as it was. Joe's used an approach and terms that my son could relate to, and got him engaged within the very first minutes of their session. We look forward to the next! 9/7/13 My son continues to work with Joe as he enters 8th grade. Joe has infinite patience and an extremely positive attitude toward learning. We met Joe S approximately one year ago. He was just the type of tutor that we needed. My daughter was struggling in Math and Language Arts and Joe was able to teach the material to her in a manner that she understood. She has since taken that foundation and excelled in both subjects and fortunately for us, she no longer requires a tutor. Joe was able to provide a bridge of knowledge for our daughter to enable her to get to the point that she could manage on her own without a tutor. We can't speak highly enough of Joe!

Ellis W. from Providence, RI

Joseph S. is a born teacher. In our initial phone conversation, we were pleased to learn about his long and impressive history of teaching, coaching, and solid resume which includes several published professional articles on the topic of teaching basketball to kids. A middle-aged player, Joe deftly illustrated many points himself in fine form. He was always cordial and easy to reach by phone. Joe is professional, punctual, and absolutely passionate about the game of basketball. His love of the game is evident in his teaching style. In each session with our exuberant 14-year-old ADHD daughter, he was consistently upbeat and positive as he skillfully kept her completely focused, involved and on her toes at each one-hour lesson. We noticed that at the end of every lesson, our daughter’s spirit always seemed lighter and her attitude more positive than at the start of each session. At times when she needed repeated demonstration and explanation, Joe was always patient, clear, and supportive. His helpful post-lesson review comments provided an objective description of our daughter’s learning style and progress. Throughout each lesson, Joe offered so much continuous sincere encouragement and praise that we even enjoyed watching the session ourselves!

As John's grandfather, I have been following John's work with his English tutor and upon consulting with John and his father I have concluded that John has benefited greatly, has established a harmonious relationship with his tutor to the point that my son has decided to continue the tutorial lessons during the upcoming academic year. My son really enjoyed working with Joe. He used sports as a way to make sense of the information that he was teaching and that worked well for my son. He was also very patient and the first session was not as overwhelming as we thought it would be. It was a great start and we're looking forward to the next couple weeks. We're hoping our son will get a better sense of how to organize his thoughts, organize his study habits, and improve his time management skills. He is comfortable with Joe and is interested in continuing the tutoring sessions.
