Compassionate and Constructive Language Acquisition

ESL began with the English Colonies. Ever since Chesapeake Bay, here in Maryland, started having English speakers, people needed to learn English. The Natives picked up some, the Swedes in Delaware, the German in Pennsylvania, the Dutch in New Amsterdam(New York), and the French in Maine. I have a Master of Arts in Christian Counseling and Discipleship. This course was accredited, providing a foundation for those who wish to take an additional two semesters and the state test for licensure as an LPC. Both theoretical and practical classes were taken, such as a substance abuse and the history of soul care, as well as labs where I was required to perform the role of a counselor in a simulated situation observed by both my professor and fellow classmates.

Before I met Matthew, I had no idea how to deal with the speaking section in the TOEFL exam. He is so patient and experienced that he has made me become confident now. He can find where is my weakness, and practice it with me. We always talk about any English materials that I have listened or watched over the week. Under his tutoring, I have improved my skills of listening and speaking by a lot. In addition, he also checks my essays and leaves comments, which helps me write essays with good qualities. My original TOEFL score is 84. I got 102 after having the lessons with Matthew for about two months. I'm really happy because my goal was to get 100. I really enjoy the time when I studied with Matthew.

Hiromi T. from Rockville, MD

Hi, I am Hiromi. I am Japanese. I was working in the U.S. and I wanted to improve my business English. I was not good at speaking and English pronunciation. Depending on what I want to improve, he provides me with great lessons. Sometimes we focus on pronunciation or conversation. We talk about specific topics using TOFEL books, and he will transcript what I say. Then he corrects my wrong sentence. To me, the lesson was really hard and intense, but that is why I feel I am improving my English skill now. His lesson is fun and very good!!! I really like his lesson!!!

Ladan S. from Germantown, MD

Matthew is a good tutor. Actually I can not speak English with confidence, because I am a foreigner from Korea who arrived a few days ago. So I asked him to teach me about speaking like a native, so we start our English speaking lesson from easy pronunciation. He always tries to check my speaking level and correct my pronunciation and accent. It's not easy for me to simulate the native English speaker, nevertheless he is patient and says words again and again. I thank him for his efforts.

Ana C. from Chevy Chase, MD

I took his TOEFL lessons for almost 6 months. It was really helpful for getting a good TOEFL score. Before his lessons, I hadn't ever had experience with the TOEFL test, so I was worried about where should I start first. However, after his lessons, it was very clear because he taught me about the strategy of each section in the test. Also, he edited my every essay for writing section. It was wonderful because it increased not only my writing skills but also my grammar skills. I really appreciate him teaching me, and I expect he is obviously helpful to one who wants to increase his or her English skills.

Ekaterina M. from Columbia, MD

We moved to the United States a few months ago and my 7-year-old son did not speak English. On his own he wouldn’t study English, but preferred to play games instead. I spent a lot of time and money looking for a tutor. And then God gave us Matthew! Fancy that! My son looks forward to the lessons every time, he studies, and learns gladly! His language skills have improved significantly. For example, he could not speak English, and now he even tries to read. Matthew definitely has the gift of teaching. The lessons are held in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. However, I’m sure that this is the best way to teach children. So if you’re finding it a challenge to find the best tutor for your child, I can’t recommend Matthew highly enough!

Yasmil M. from Columbia, MD

He is also very patient and gives me all the support that I need to achieve my goals. I am very happy with Matthew as my tutor in each step of my preparation to successfully pass the USMLE STEP 2 CS.

I requested lessons from Matthew that would focus on practicing English conversation. We talked about a lot of things, such as the news, movies, culture, food, sports, travel, and various experiences. All of my conversations with him helped acclimate myself with my new environment in America. Now that we know a lot about each other, I feel like he is my best friend. He has extensive experience in foreign cultures and teaching foreigners. It helped me. If you are not fluent in English, having lessons with him is the best way to improve your English.

Toshiko H. from Rockville, MD

I took his TOEFL lesson and it was a great experience to learn from him. Before his lesson, I didn't know how to tackle TOEFL study. He taught me how to study, how to score up with many logics and techniques. Especially he taught me how to write TOEFL essay with these logics using some templates. I did homework before every lesson, 3 essays, 3 speaking, 1 listening, and 1 reading, which made my skill much better than before. He also pointed my weak point, grammar. Then we started studying grammar, which made me writing essay easier than before. I appreciate him teaching me all these things and trust that I can get much better score on TOEFL.

I was in special need for English conversation opportunities and came upon with this site and Matthew. Unavoidably I decided to meet and have some lessons with several tutors and now he is the one I've made up my mind as my tutor. Matthew and I have met for lunch and a lesson for a while now. He has abundant experiences in this area and, above all, such great sincerity and patience so I feel very comfortable with him. Yue Z. from Owings Mills, MD

Matthew is an very experienced tutor with tremendous knowledge base, from history, politics, culture, to medical science, sometimes I would wonder: OMG, he is a live encyclopedia! He provided studying materials involving various subjects ahead of each week, which is also a learning process for me to get familiar with world history, modern technology and current cultures. During the class Matthew encouraged me to speak out my understanding of studying materials by asking questions from different angles. To be honest, I think I benefit more from his questions than the studying materials themselves because his questions help me to think critically, and also better understand the thought process of content producers. I would highly recommend Matthew to whom are interested to both improve language skill and expand knowledge base.

Sayaka B. from Olney, MD

I don't want to share with anybody my best teacher! I think he is a very professional, very flexible, very skillful and perfect time management teacher. I am the Japanese, I grew up in Japan, I learned English through middle school to college. But that English skill is just satisfied to go good college and get a good job in Japan. I moved to US for 6years ago and I found my English skill was nothing to help to live in US at all! Even if I got a job, I lost many jobs because language barrier, so I decided to take a class. Mr. Matthew has lots of experience to teach students that non-native English speaker. When I fist met him, he figured out my weak point only 10min and developed my class lesson plan really quick. He also sends me a big volume homework every week, this homework is hard to finish but this is really help to improve my English skill! Even if I feel too much, he can arrange homework volume. I can't find any negative point in his lesson! I feel he likes teaching English, so that I can get an awesome lesson every time.
