ADD/ADHD

I am currently working on my dissertation as I pursue my Ph.D. in Health Psychology. ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are two mental health disorders that primarily occur in children yet can also continue into adulthood. ADHD is more common in boys than girls with most symptoms appearing in the early years of school. The 3 primary symptoms of ADHD in children are inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. With issues of inattentiveness children have a tendency to lack focus, daydream, forget things, and show problems with organization. When they display hyperactivity they appear restless, have an inability to sit still and quiet and even talk excessively. Last, issues of impulsivity are displayed by episodes of impatience, seem to be easily irritated, dislike waiting one’s turn to speak and consistently interrupt others. In adults these symptoms appear more as problems of time management and organization, being excessively late, an inability to control one’s anger and the development of mood swings, all of which can result in employment difficulties, anxiety, depression and even substance abuse. There is still no definite cause of ADHD. Sine no blood tests can diagnose ADHD patients displaying symptoms are usually required to give a complete medical history and submit to a physical examination to rule out other medical issues. After a psychiatric assessment and information from the family, school, etc. an ADHD diagnosis is primarily made. There is no cure for ADHD but treatments consist of medication and various psychosocial therapies (behavioral modification and social skills training).
