Retired Teacher for Tutoring

I am interested in tutoring students who want to learn. I worked in public school systems for 33 years before retiring. 6 of those years were spent working with early childhood education in rural Northwest Tennessee. The next 6 years I taught child care and child development along with general home economics at Fox Tech High School in SAISD. My last 21 years were in special education at Roosevelt High School in NEISD. I have been extremely fortunate in receiving additional training in man...

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with students with ADD/ADHD in every job that I have held. I have a master's degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in special education. I would work with each individual student to determine the best method of teaching them. Differentiated instruction is often critical in working with students with ADD/ADHD - the trick is taking the time to learn how the student learns best.

Aspergers

I worked with a student with Aspergers throughout his high school years. He had a one-on-one assistant assigned to him and I learned a lot from letting her lead the way since she knew him so well. I was responsible for developing an alternate state test for an Aspergers student whose special gift was music. Aspergers is part of the autism spectrum and I have completed a one week training course in Rockville MD on autism. I worked closely with three self-contained autistic classroom teachers, serving as the teacher mentor for one who was beginning to teach.

autism

I completed a one week training course in Rockville MD on autism with our self-contained autistic classroom teacher. I worked closely with three self-contained autistic classroom teachers, serving as the teacher mentor for one who was beginning to teach. I have spent many hours observing and evaluating students at the Autistic Treatment Center in San Antonio TX and representing NEISD as the special education component of an autistic student placed in a group home in Houston, TX. Many of the autistic students at Roosevelt have participated on a regular, consistent basis as part of my community-based vocational instruction program. I developed and implemented Individual Transition Plans for many of our autistic students.
