ADD/ADHD

Presently I work as a Reading Specialist with Middle and High School special needs students. My case load consists of students with a variety of disabilities such as Autism, Aspergers, ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, and emotional difficulties. For my students with ADD/ADHD I am very cognizant that they may need periods of time within each session to move about and that as instruction occurs they may need to manipulate something in their hands or possibly chew gum. I chunk many of my lessons into working on reading and giving student short breaks. I have found many of my students enjoy being read to thus enabling me to use reading to them as a reward after some explicit reading instruction. I use the Wilson Reading Program with a variety of my students and I find the different sections of the individual lessons allow for a variety of natural breaks to transpire.
